  • On the Defensive: Identity, Language, and Partisan Reactions to Political Scandal

Open Access•Pierce D Ekstrom, Marti Hope Gonzales et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2025

We investigated how individuals judge politicians embroiled in scandal. Drawing on social identity and realistic group conflict theory, we predicted that beyond an overall ingroup bias, partisans would be particularly forgiving of in-party politicians who denied or justified their misconduct rather than apologize for it. By insisting that they did nothing wrong, these politicians defend the public image of their party and signal their commitment …

    Open Access•Jennifer Filson Moses, Marti Hope Gonzales•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 26

Presidential television advertisements from 1980 through 2012 were examined to test empirically George Lakoff's descriptions of American moral ideology. Advertisements were coded for instantiations of the moral themes that Lakoff asserts underlie liberal and conservative ideology (Strict Father versus Nurturant Parent). Candidates' political‐party affiliation, election year, and policy issue(s) addressed in the television advertisement were asses…

Oishi, Alexander J Rothman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2007•Cited by: 17

The authors conducted 3 studies to test a socioecological model of procommunity action. Study 1 showed that residents of stable communities purchased a "critical habitat" license plate to support preservation of the environment in their home state more often than did residents of mobile communities. Study 2 demonstrated that home game baseball attendance was less dependent on the team's record in stable cities than in mobile cities. Study 3, an e…

  • Variations of Citizenship Education: A Content Analysis of Rights, Obligations, and Participation Concepts in High School Civic Textbooks

Marti Hope Gonzales, Eric Riedel et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 6

A quantitative content analysis of three widely adopted high school civics textbooks revealed that concepts associated with traditional liberalism—citizens' rights and freedoms—far outnumber concepts associated with classical republicanism or communitarianism (e.g., civic virtue, the reciprocal relation between citizens' rights and their responsibilities to the public good). Moreover, this focus on rights and freedoms to the relative exclusion of…

  • Collectivistic Values and Individualistic Language as Predictors of Endorsement of Citizenship Activities Among High School Students

Ian Williamson, Marti Hope Gonzales et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This is an exploratory study to determine whether the way in which attitudes about citizenship actions were measured would predict American students' endorsement of those actions. In a split-half design, half of the student respondents completed a questionnaire in which they rated the extent to which various citizenship actions were important; the other half of the sample rated those same actions on the extent to which they constituted duties. Co…

Howard Lavine, Cynthia J Thomsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 17•References: 17

A model of interattitudinal consistency was proposed to address: (a) the factors mediating political expert-novice differences in interattitudinal organization and (b) the processes mediating the development of interattitudinal organization among political novices. In Experiment 1, both expertise and situationally induced thought (among novices) heightened the extent to which pairs of policies were viewed as instrumentally influencing the attainm…

Subjects were induced to believe they had committed a gaffe with either relatively mild or severe consequences for a confederate/victim of either higher or lower status than they, and their verbal and nonverbal behaviors captured on videotape served as the source of dependent variable measures
