  • Perceptual Development of Second Language Sound Categories in a Study Abroad Program

Open Access•Xu Xi, Christine Shea et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2026

This study examines the interrelationships among the language learning context, cross-language perceptual mapping, and individual differences in the acquisition of perceptual categorization in a study abroad program over one academic year. Thirty Mandarin speakers learning Spanish completed an identification task that employed Spanish /p-b, t-d, k-ɡ/ contrasts on three continua differing in voice onset time upon arrival and at the end of their pr…

  • A Review of the Effectiveness of Hand Gestures in Second Language Phonetic Training

    Open Access•Xu Xi, Peng Li•ARTICLE•Languages•2026

This narrative review synthesizes 24 empirical studies on the role of four types of pedagogical gestures (beat, durational, pitch, and articulatory) in second language (L2) phonetic training since 2010. We reviewed studies involving training interventions to assess the efficacy, mediating factors, and robustness of multimodal training. The findings confirm that gestural training is a powerful tool, yielding the most robust positive effects for L2…

  • The interaction of auditory acuity and L2 input in suprasegmental cue-weighting shifts after study abroad

Open Access•Peng Li, Xu Xi et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2026

This longitudinal study investigates how auditory acuity and the amount of second language (L2) input lead learners to shift L2 cue-weighting strategies towards native norms in an immersion context. Thirty Mandarin-speaking students were tested on Spanish lexical stress perception upon arrival (T1) and before leaving Spain after one academic year (T2). Due to cross-linguistic influence, the learners placed more weight on pitch for stress percepti…

  • Revisiting the Benefits of Hand Gestures in L2 Pronunciation

Open Access•Sichang Gao, Xu Xi et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2026•References: 58

Multimodal phonetic training with hand gestures can support L2 speech learning, but few studies have examined its generalization effects. In this between-subjects study with a pretest/post-test paradigm, 39 Japanese learners of Mandarin practiced Mandarin aspirated stops, high back rounded vowel /u/, and T3 Sandhi over four training sessions. The gesture (G) group ( n = 20) received training with hand gestures illustrating the phonetic and articu…

  • The effects of oral narrative interventions on second language learning

Open Access•Ting Yao, Xu Xi et al.•ARTICLE•System•2025

  • Mapping the evolution and future directions of creative tourism

  • Improving Second Language Vowel Production With Hand Gestures Encoding Visible Articulation

    Open Access•Xu Xi, Peng Li et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 42

This study investigates whether audiovisual phonetic training with hand gestures encoding visible or nonvisible articulation features has a differential impact on learning second language sounds. Ninety-nine Catalan-Spanish bilingual students were trained to differentiate English /æ/ and /ʌ/, which differ in the visible lip aperture and nonvisible tongue position, with training involving no gestures, gestures representing the lip aperture, or ges…

  • Thanks or Tanks

Alev Senem Ozakin, Xu Xi et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning and Development•2023

The present study investigates whether training second language pronunciation with tactile cues facilitates the production of non-native sounds involving accessible articulatory features. In a between-subjects experiment with a pretest-training-posttest design, 50 Turkish learners of English received audiovisual training on a set of target words and sentences containing two English interdental fricatives, /θ/ and /ð/, in one of two conditions, ta…

  • Robust Watermarking Scheme for Vector Geographic Data Based on the Ratio Invariance of DWT–CSVD Coefficients

Open Access•Chengyi Qu, Cheng-yi Qu et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2022

Traditional frequency-domain watermarking algorithms for vector geographic data suffer from disadvantages such as the random watermark embedding position, unpredictable embedding strength, and difficulty in resisting multiple attacks at the same time. To address these problems, we propose a novel watermarking algorithm based on the geometric invariance of the ratios of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and complex singular value decomposition (CSV…

  • Hong Kong

    Xu Xi•ARTICLE•World Literature Today•2019

TO CURATE A reading list of ten to fifteen Hong Kong books that will inspire the international reader of literature is no easy task. For one thing, ten to fifteen is an arbitrary range, and for someone who has devoted so much time and her writing to her birth city, I am keenly aware there are many other titles that could and even should be on this list. But to curate is a curious task, and what I’ve selected might be best defined by this OED exam…

  • Maternity Leave

    Xu Xi•ARTICLE•Wasafiri•2010

  • Writing the literature of non‐denial

    Open Access•Xu Xi•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2000

The paper is divided into three sections, and traces my evolution as a ‘Hong Kong writer’ in English through questions of identity, language and creativity. In ‘Ethnicity and culture,’ I discuss how both factors constrain and heighten my creative process. Despite my Hong Kong origins, I am questionably ‘local’ because of my ethnicity and personal history. The city itself embraces a schizophrenic identity, neither Chinese nor Western, and lacks a …
