    Open Access•Alejandro Montes, Santiago Vazquez•ARTICLE•Recerca•2025

Open Access•Cecilia Castaño Collado, Santiago Vazquez•ARTICLE•Papers Revista de Sociologia•2023•Cited by: 1

Resistance in academia is a pervasive phenomenon. Gender equality was prescribed more than a decade ago in Spain, but the problem remains unsolved. Contributing to feminist institutionalism, this paper identifies both the manifestations of resistance intended to interfere in the implementation of gender equality initiatives in Spanish universities and the strategic responses enacted by gender equality agents to counteract those resistances. To th…

  • Retracted: Survival After Pentobarbitone Overdose Confirmed Through Prescription, Recreational and Illicit Substance Evaluation (Prise) Programme in Australia

Open Access•Thanjira Jiranantakan, Sarah Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2021

Deaths caused by barbiturate overdoses have increased in the past decade, especially as a result of suicide attempts. Pentobarbitone is a central nervous system depressant used for sedation and euthanasia in veterinary medicine. However, pentobarbitone analysis is not commonly available in the hospital setting; hence, its occurrence in overdoses is under-reported. Herein we describe a patient who ingested pentobarbitone obtained from the Internet…

  • Women’s networking in Spanish academia: A ‘catch-all’ strategy or strategic sisterhood

    Santiago Vazquez•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Education•2021•References: 10

The relevance of networking in academia and the gendered dynamics involved are well established in the literature. The persistence of the old-boy network pushes academic women to rationalize whether or not to ‘play the game’ and under what terms. Inspired by Feminist Institutionalism, this article explores the schemas of interpretation which academic women rely on to find meaning and to guide day-to-day relational dynamics. Drawing on 40 in-depth…

  • Gendered management in Spanish universities: Functional segregation among vice-rectors

Cecilia Castaño Collado, Cecilia Castaño et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The reorganisation of higher education according to the marketplace logic – and framed within the process of Europeanisation and globalisation – has run parallel to a significant rise in the number of women in senior management positions at Spanish universities. This would seem to be a step to more gender equality. However, the analysis of the situation used thus far, based on conventional indicators, may be harbouring a not-so-egalitarian realit…

This article presents and reflects upon the results of a survey involving a sample of women who have experienced gender-based violence and who have turned to an institutional centre to tackle their situation. In aiming to move beyond a descriptive treatment, we consider the plurality of user types and their remote use patterns in relation to the resources offered by virtual feminist communities designed to promote increased sociopolitical mobilis…

Open Access•Maria G Guzmán, Otto Peláez et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2006

Over the past 10 years, the American Region has witnessed the reintroduction and dissemination of dengue virus serotype 3. In this paper we describe the main clinical and epidemiologic features of the dengue 3 epidemic that broke out in Cuba between June 2001 and March 2002, as well as the measures that were undertaken to eliminate it. A total of 14 524 confirmed cases were reported, 12 889 (88,7%) of them in the City of Havana. Eighty-one cases …

    Open Access•Maria G Guzmán, J L Pelegrino et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2003

The majority of the participating laboratories showed an excellent level of performance in detecting dengue IgG and IgM antibodies. However, the deficiencies found in some instances confirm the need for continuing to improve laboratory diagnosis of dengue in the Region of the Americas

  • Enhanced severity of secondary dengue-2 infections: Death rates in 1981 and 1997 Cuban outbreaks

Open Access•Maria G Guzmán, Gustavo Kourí et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2002

We found a marked increase in severity with the longer of the two intervals (20 years) between an initial DEN-1 infection and a secondary DEN-2 infection. Such a difference may be due to subtle shifts in causative dengue strains or to changes with the passage of time in the circulating population of human dengue antibodies. These observations have important implications for dengue control, pathogenic mechanisms, and vaccine development

In 1981, there was an epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever produced by serotype 2 of the virus. This time 344,203 clinical cases were reported, 10,312 of which were severe cases of hemorrhagic fever that led to 158 fatalities (101 of them among children). The reintroduction of dengue, and specifically of dengue viral serot…

The resulting double-stranded DNA product was typed by a second round of PCR amplifi…

The samples were obtained from 118 patients, of whom 91 had been clinically diagnosed with dengue and 27 with a viral infection unrelated to that disease. The first group of patients came from Costa Rica and Nicaragua and the second group from Cuba. All the samples were tested for IgM antibody against dengue v…

Open Access•Maria G Guzmán, Santiago Vazquez et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1997

The principal aim of the report presented here is to describe the reappearance of dengue serotype 3 in the Americas, following a 17-year absence, through the recent experience of Nicaragua.
