  • Peer Assessment

    Open Access•Keith J Topping, Keith Topping•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2021

The present paper offers a definition of peer assessment and then reviews the major syntheses on its effectiveness. However, the main part of this paper is preoccupied with how to do PA successfully. A typology of 44 elements explains the differences between the many types of peer assessment. Then a theoretical model outlines some of the processes which may occur during PA. Initially, only a few of these will be used, but as those engaged in PA b…

    Keith J Topping, Keith Topping•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Implementation fidelity or integrity is a key variable in evidence-based interventions, but is rarely assessed by student response or over a long period. This study related implementation fidelity in independent book reading to tested reading achievement over a year. The sample of 852,295 students in 3243 primary and secondary schools was reduced by schools providing incomplete data and the discarding of mid-year data. Achievement was measured pr…

Open Access•Soyeong Pae, Hyojin Yoon et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2016

The objective of this study was to investigate changes in the natural language environments of families with typically-developing infants receiving language feedback in South Korea. Volunteer parents of 99 children aged 4–16 months were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. During 6 months’ intervention, the experimental group recorded weekly day-long automatically-analyzed LENA measures of language environment and viewed feedbac…

  • Teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion in high schools

Christopher Boyle, Keith J Topping et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers and Teaching•2013

This study investigated the attitudes of secondary teachers to inclusion in schools. Three hundred and ninety-one teaching and management-level staff from 19 mainstream and 6 special schools in one local authority in Scotland completed a survey. Overall, teaching staff were pro-inclusion, conditional on adequate support and resources. There was a significant gender difference, with female teachers being more inclusive than their male colleagues. …

  • Peer tutoring in reading

    Open Access•David Miller, Keith J Topping et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 22

BackgroundPaired reading (PR) is an application of peer tutoring. It has been extensively researched, and its efficacy across a range of outcomes has been established. Benefits include improvements in key reading skills, and also in affective aspects of learning. Several studies have shown gains in self-esteem, although measurement methods have varied, and the model of self-esteem has rarely been clearly articulated.AimsTo investigate the changes…

  • Theoretical models of culture shock and adaptation in international students in higher education

    Yuefang Zhou, Divya Jindal-Snape et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2008•Cited by: 56•References: 38

Theoretical concepts of culture shock and adaptation are reviewed, as applied to the pedagogical adaptation of student sojourners in an unfamiliar culture. The historical development of 'traditional' theories of culture shock led to the emergence of contemporary theoretical approaches, such as 'culture learning', 'stress and coping' and 'social identification'.These approaches can be accommodated within a broad theoretical framework based on the a…

    Open Access•William G Brozo, Gerry Shiel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent & Adult…•2007

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a global effort to assess reading literacy. The authors of this article focus on the variable of engagement—the student characteristic on PISA that had the largest correlation with achievement in reading. Next, salient findings related to engagement from three English‐speaking PISA countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland) are presented. The authors conclude with a di…

  • Peer Assessment Between Students in Colleges and Universities

    Open Access•Keith J Topping, Keith Topping•ARTICLE•Review of Educational Research•1998•References: 2

A definition and typology of peer assessment between students in higher education is proposed, and the theoretical underpinnings of the method are discussed. A review of the developing literature follows, including both process and outcome studies. This indicates that peer assessment is of adequate reliability and validity in a wide variety of applications. Peer assessment of writing and peer assessment using marks, grades, and tests have shown p…
