  • Animals and People. Hunting, Fishing, Stockbreeding and Diet in Sumatra from Late Eleventh to Early Fourteenth Century: The Example of the Kota Cina Settlement Site in the Strait of Malacca

    Open Access•Stéphane Frère, Frere•ARTICLE•Archipel•2024•References: 21

The size of the animal remains corpus uncovered at Kota Cina (21,900 remains of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and molluscs) makes it possible to document the dietary practices of the populations of the Strait of Malacca at the time. The great variety of animal species inventoried (75 taxonomic ranks identified) is consistent with the richness of the local biotopes, both terrestrial and aquatic. Domestic species contribute only to a small extent …

  • Historical management of equine resources in France from the Iron Age to the Modern Period: A Cross Disciplinary Approach

Open Access•Pierre Clavel, Jean Dumoncel et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2022

Donkeys, horses and their mule hybrids have had a far-reaching impact on human history since they have been domesticated several millennia ago. These animals have indeed provided many economic, social and cultural resources that fueled both agricultural and economic development, war making and cultural exchange. Gaining a full understanding of the respective contributions of the different equine species to past societies remains, however, difficu…

    Open Access•Stéphane Frère, Jean-Yves Dufour et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology of food•2019•References: 6
