It is now more than a decade since the first meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum was held in Canberra, in 1989. Since then, opinions about APEC, its achievements, and future role have ranged from the wildly optimistic to the utterly dismissive. Yet APEC survives, and the relative success of the recent APEC Leaders' Meeting in Shanghai demonstrates that the organization can still play a very useful role in regional affai…

The leading role of the state in nineteenth-century Russian industrialization is one of the most widely accepted notions in economic history. Thus state-sponsored industrialization, deeply rooted in the strength of the despotic state and the subservience of an undifferentiated peasantry and an insignificant middle class, began in earnest in the era of the Great Reforms, after the Crimean War had shocked the government out of its economic lethargy…

  • Foreign Enterprise in Russian and Soviet Industry

    Open Access•John P Mckay•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•1974•Cited by: 8•References: 8

This examination of the role of foreign enterprise in Russian and Soviet industrial development from 1632 to the present indicates that it was a significant one. Tsarist and Soviet Russia used foreign enterprise to their own advantage very skillfully by periodically acquiring advanced industrial technology and thereby reducing their own “backwardness” relative to the West. In doing so, they succeeded in remaining firmly in control of their own ec…

Yet, the author shows that did not really understand the basic economic problems of farmers. On the other hand, did demonstrate an unusual knowledge of, and interest in, conservation, ecology, and scientific farming. As Wik says, views on technology, conservation, ecology, and the mechanization of rural America were generally prophetic, enlightened, progressive and often far ahead of times (pp. 160-61). Other topics covered include Ford's flirtat…

  • Foreign Entrepreneurship in Russian Industrialization, 1880–1914

    Open Access•John P Mckay•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1966

It is well known that foreign capital was very important in Russian industry before the revolution. Various investigators have attempted to quantify this foreign investment by industry and nationality; according to the most generally reproduced estimate, almost one third of the total capital of all industrial corporations operating in Russia was held by foreigners in 1914. These statistical studies, which sum up much of our present knowledge of f…
