Evaluations, Enactment, and Expectations
This paper elaborates and refines a theory of evaluations and expectations by Fisek, Berger, and Norman which is an integration of status characteristics and expectation states theory with source theory. The elaboration of evaluations and expectations theory is achieved by incorporating ideas from Moore's role enactment and second-order expectations theory. The new formulation can generate predictions for situations where the sources of evaluatio…
The Effect of Group Dreamwork on Spiritual Well-Being
This exploratory study investigated the effect of Jungian-oriented group dreamwork on spiritual well-being and the related constructs of purpose in life and social interest. Participants were students at a religiously oriented liberal arts college. An experimental design with matching was employed. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) followed by univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. Power and effect size analyses were also emp…
The Identification of Body Build Stereotypes in Young Children
Wage Disparities and Performance Expectations
The results of this study provide evidence that differences in pay can induce corresponding differences in subjective assessments of one's own ability relatice to others. In an expectation states experiment, men and women who were paid more than their partners were more resistant to influence by those partners than men and women who were paid less than their partners. The theoretical and practical implications of this inference from reward alloca…
Status, Demeanor and Influence
This study addresses the recent debate regarding the relative effects of status characteristics vis-a-vis demeanor on influence in task-oriented groups. A 2x2 x2 x2 factorial design was employed to test for the separate effects of demeanor, race and sex over two experimental time-blocks. Yielding to influence was the dependent measure. One hundred and sixty-two subjects were introduced via video monitors to (ostensible) partners whose physical an…
Status Characteristics and Expectation States
In their most recent (1977) theoretical statement dealing with status characteristics and expectation states, Berger and his associates propose a linearfunction for predicting numerical values on a measure of relative power and prestige in task-oriented groups. In this paper we briefly outline the theory and the manner in which this function is employed, and we present a methodfor parameter estimation and assessment of goodness offit which is pre…

Relationships Between Source Status, Authoritarianism, and Conformity in a Social Influence Setting
The present study investigated the relationship between authoritarianism and the status of the influencer on conformity behavior. Subjects who varied in level of authoritarianism were experimentally confronted with 40 disagreements from a or status source on an ambiguous perceptual task. The dependent variable was the number of times the subject changed his initial response to agree with his partner. It was found that low authoritarians conformed…

Social Status and Social Influence
Process data from an investigation of the relationship between relative social status and interpersonal influence in small group interactions support and refine conclusions derived in an earlier report employing aggregate analyses. A simple process model is presented and data evaluated in light of expected results generated by the model. Discrepancies between expected and attained results are discussed, and interpretations provided for further ex…
Status and Influence in Small Group Interactions
Previous research has been quite consistent in demonstrating a status generalization phenomenon in task-oriented small group interactions. Prior status differences between individuals in such groups appear to lead to patterns of influence which are highly correlated with the initial status differentiation, even though such differentiation has no obvious or direct bearing on the task confronting the group. An experiment was conducted to examine th…

The Application of a Self-Instructional Technique to Develop a Test-Taking Strategy
Test-wiseness is recognized as an important source of variation in educational and psychological measurement. A test-wise examinee can be expected to obtain a higher test score than an equally competent examinee who lacks test sophistication. Test constructors have attempted to reduce such variation by writing clear and comprehensive directions concerning timing and scoring. However, no matter how good the directions, cursory observation of any g…
