  • The explanation of sexual offending

Tony Ward, Anthony Beech et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Sex…•2017

This essay focuses on four core issues and their normative implications associated with the “theory problem” as it relates to sexual offending. First, a critical task is to build multi-level and interfield theories that are directly responsive to the complex nature of human functioning and psychological architecture. Second, an important cognitive task is to take seriously the level of human agency and mental state psychological explanations of a…

  • The Wiley Handbook on the Theories, Assessment and Treatment of Sexual Offending

Open Access•Douglas P Boer, Ross Bartels et al.•BOOK•Wiley Handbook on the Theories,…•2016

Deviant sexual fantasies have long been regarded as an important factor in sexual offending, with research showing that they serve multiple functions (e.g., inducing arousal, planning behavior) and interrelate with numerous other factors (e.g., emotional states, personality). However, within this chapter, an evaluation of the existing theoretical accounts is provded, which indicates that the construct is not well understood or conceptualized. As …

  • An examination of potential biases in research designs used to assess the efficacy of sex offender treatment

    Open Access•Anthony Beech, Anthony R Beech et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aggression Conflict…•2015•References: 1

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential biases in research designs used to assess the efficacy of sex offender treatment. Design/methodology/approach: In all, 50 treatment studies (n = 13,886) were examined using a random effects meta-analysis model. Findings: Results indicated a positive effect of treatment for both sexual (OR = 0.58, 95%, CI 0.45-0.74, p <0.0001), and general recidivism (OR = 0.54, 95%, CI 0.42-0.69, p <0…

  • Effective risk management planning for those convicted of sexual offending

Open Access•Stephanie Kewley, Anthony Beech et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aggression Conflict…•2015•References: 3

The aim of this paper is to highlight key themes within the process of online grooming from the victim's perspective. Eight adolescents who experienced online grooming were interviewed and data were analysed using Thematic Analysis. It was found that participants, who had been both sexually abused online and/or offline, were subjected to a range of grooming experiences. Consistent grooming themes within this sample included: manipulation; decepti…

  • Individual differences in cognitive processes

Open Access•Anthony Beech, Anthony R Beech et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1991

A study is reported that examined the relationship between a measure of schizophrenic‐like characteristics (schizotypy) in normal subjects and cognitive inhibition. Both repetitive and semantic measures of priming were used. It was found that low schizotypes showed negative priming (i.e. longer reaction times to the re‐presentation of initially ignored stimuli) while high schizotypes did not; high schizotypes exhibited semantic facilitation (i.e.…

  • Individual differences in negative priming

Open Access•Anthony Beech, Anthony R Beech et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1987•Cited by: 1

A study is reported of normal subjects, selected for degree of schizotypal personality traits, on a cognitive task designed to measure, in a negative priming paradigm, the extent to which they differed in interference and presumed inhibitory effects on performance. The main individual differences measure used - a new scale of schizotypy - showed, as predicted, a significant correlation with negative priming. The correlation with a measure of 'int…
