  • Year-old children’s digital language and literacy practices at home: A scoping review of the literature

Open Access•Sandra El Gemayel, Rosie Flewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Literacy•2026

Research on young children’s use of digital media has increased over recent decades but less is known about the digital language and literacy practices at home of children aged under 3 years. This scoping review was conducted to map knowledge on this phenomenon to inform the ESRC-funded study Toddlers, Tech and Talk. Fifty-two papers published from January 2000 to June 2024 were identified from six databases: Australian Education Index, British E…

  • Parental mediation of very young children’s early experiences with digital media at home

Open Access•Janet Goodall, Rosie Flewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2025

Digital devices are now found in the majority of homes, including the homes of very young children, and may be said to be a “dominant force” in their lives. This highlights the critical role parents play in mediating their very young children's access to, ownership and use of digital technology in the family home. One of the greatest challenges that parents experience is managing the tension between enhancing their children's digital opportunitie…

As digital technologies have become increasingly embedded in daily family life, there has been a growing international concern about children's protection, provision and participation rights in a digital environment. Recognising this, the Committee on the Rights of the Child published General Comment No. 25 Children's Rights in Relation to the Digital Environment (CRC, 2021), giving detailed advice on implementation issues in this area and callin…

Open Access•Rosie Flewitt, Mukdarut Bangpan et al.•ARTICLE•Curator The Museum Journal•2023

This rapid evidence assessment (REA) of literature was conducted to aggregate knowledge about young children's engagement with objects in science museums. The review focuses on empirical studies published between 2000 and 2020 reporting on children in the age range from birth to eight years. Scrutiny of a final sample of 48 peer‐reviewed papers indicated that certain museum object characteristics may arouse children's curiosity more than others. …

  • Understanding parents’ conflicting beliefs about children’s digital book reading

Open Access•N Kucirkova, Rosie Flewitt•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Literacy•2022

In light of growing evidence that many parents are deeply concerned about their young children’s increasing technology use, in this paper we report on aspects of a study funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, where we sought to understand parents’ views on children’s digital book reading. We introduced seven families to four award-winning digital books (story apps and e-books), observed how the mothers mediated their children’s di…

Open Access•N Kucirkova, Maurice Gattis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Numerous studies have documented the benefits of parent-child shared reading of print books, but few studies have examined parent-child reading behaviours with digital personalized books. This lab-based study examined the child language outcomes following shared reading of a personalized digital book by twenty-six British mothers and their 3- to 4-year-old children. The digital book included pages that were individualized to each participating ch…

  • Porous boundaries: Reconceptualising the home literacy environment as a digitally networked space for 0–3 year olds

Open Access•Rosie Flewitt, Alison Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Literacy•2020

Most children growing up in contemporary homes in post-industrial countries use digital media as part of everyday literacy activities, such as to connect with distant family and friends, watch their favourite programmes, play games and find information. However, conceptualizations of the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) have not yet adapted to the implications of these comparatively new practices for young children’s knowledge about literacy or th…

  • Early childhood practitioner beliefs about digital media: Integrating technology into a child-centred classroom environment

Charlotte Vidal-hall, Rosie Flewitt et al.•ARTICLE•European Early Childhood…•2020

The effective integration of educational technologies into early childhood education remains a significant challenge. An important element of this challenge is how practitioner beliefs about pedagogy relate to how digital technologies are used in the early years classroom. Focussing on early childhood practitioner beliefs in relation to pedagogy and digital technologies, this paper reports on a doctoral study where Educational Design Research (ED…

  • Storytelling and story-acting: Co-construction in action

Open Access•Teresa Cremin, Rosie Flewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Research•2017•References: 4

In the light of sustained interest in the potential value of young children’s narrative play, this article examines Vivian Gussin Paley’s approach to storytelling and story-acting, in this case with 3- to 5-year-olds. It scrutinises how children’s narratives are co-constructed during adult–child and peer interactions through spoken and embodied modes, as their stories are scribed by an adult and later dramatised by their peers. Data are drawn fro…

  • Understanding Research with Children and Young People

Alison Clark, Rosie Flewitt et al.•BOOK•Understanding Research with…•2014

How does it impact on policy and practice, and on the lives of children themselves? This book helps you to understand how research is designed and carried out to explore questions about the lives of children and young people. It tackles the methodological, practical and ethical challenge…

In this paper, we discuss how iPads offer innovative opportunities for early literacy learning but also present challenges for teachers and children. We lent iPads to a Children's Centre nursery (3- to 4-year-olds), a primary school reception class (4- to 5-year-olds) and a Special School (7- to 13-year-olds), discussed their potential uses with staff in pre- and post-interviews and observed how they were integrated into practice over a two-month…

    Open Access•Melanie Nind, Rosie Flewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2011

The paper tells of the social constructs surrounding young children with learning difficulties in their home, ‘special’ early education setting and ‘inclusive’ or mainstream early education setting in England. The exploratory study focused on how three‐ to four‐year‐old children made sense of their environments and how their identities were constructed by different parties in the different contexts. Ethnographic case studies were conducted using …

  • Bringing ethnography to a multimodal investigation of early literacy in a digital age

    Open Access•Rosie Flewitt•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2011•Cited by: 19•References: 13

In this article I reflect on the insights that the well established traditions of ethnography can bring to the more recent analytic tools of multimodality in the investigation of early literacy practices. First, I consider the intersection between ethnography and multimodality, their compatibility and the tensions and ambivalences that arise from their potentially conflicting epistemological framings. Drawing on ESRC-funded case studies of three …

This paper tells of the social experiences of three four‐year‐old children with learning disabilities as they negotiate their daily lives in their homes and early education settings in England. We apply a social model of childhood disability to the relatively unexplored territory of young children and use vignettes drawn from video observation to explore the interactive spaces contained in settings with different cultures of inclusion. Using a mu…

    Open Access•Rosie Flewitt•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2006•Cited by: 22•References: 9

This article reports on the use of video to collect dynamic visual data in education research and proposes that using visual technologies to collect data can give new insights into classroom interaction. Video data unveil how young children use the full range of material and bodily resources available to them to make and express meaning, forcing a reconsideration of Vygotskian accounts of the relationship between thought and language by producing…

  • Conducting research with young children: Some ethical considerations

Rosie Flewitt•ARTICLE•Early Child Development and Care•2005

The recent foundation of a ‘Young Children's Perspectives’ special interest group in the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) reflects a general move in social research towards the respectful and inclusive involvement of children in the research process. However, established education research guidelines often provide no more than a loose ethical framework, appearing to focus on avoiding poor ethical conduct rather tha…
