Neurodiversity and academic integrity
Academic misconduct policies can disadvantage neurodivergent students through ableist assessment design, surveillance technologies, and pedagogies of forced disclosure. In this narrative review, the intersection of neurodiversity and academic integrity in higher education was examined by analyzing 15 sources, using postplagiarism as a conceptual framing. Three themes emerged: (1) neurodivergent students face intersectional challenges when academi…
What should we be assessing exactly? Higher education staff narratives on gen AI integration of assessment in a postplagiarism era
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has challenged assumptions about assessments in higher education. Although GenAI chatbots create opportunities for inclusive learning, their misuse raises new concerns about academic integrity. This study provides empirical insight to inform assessment practices designed to include chatbots ethically. Guided by a postplagiarism framing, our research question was: How do educators make meaning of the ethi…
Academic misconduct appeal services in China
Academic misconduct appeal services have quietly emerged within China's education marketplace, with commercial agencies promoting themselves on social media to assist international students facing misconduct hearings. While existing research on academic integrity has emphasized prevention and detection, far less attention has been paid to what occurs after an allegation is raised and students enter formal appeal processes. This study examines the…
Think Piece
Trust has been a central theme in academic integrity discourse for decades. In this piece, I think about trust from a variety of perspectives: student conduct, faculty conduct, and organizational trust. I then discuss the role of trust in addressing misconduct. These framings are drawn from a model of Comprehensive Academic Integrity (CAI), in which academic integrity includes and extends beyond student conduct

Decolonizing academic integrity
The purpose of this article is to explore theoretical and practical considerations for decolonizing academic integrity. I explore values associated with academic integrity, including both Western and Indigenous perspectives. I draw from scholarship on decolonizing research methods and practices, contemplating the transferability to academic integrity practices and policies. Synthesizing key concepts from the literature, I theorize strategies for …

Academic Integrity Policies of Publicly Funded Universities in Western Canada
We examined 45 academic integrity policy documents from 24 publicly-funded universities in Canada’s four western provinces using a qualitative research design. We extracted data related to 5 core elements of exemplary academic integrity policy (i.e., access, detail, responsibility, approach, support). Most documents pointed to punitive approaches for academic misconduct and were based on the notion that academic misconduct results from a lack of …

A Scoping Review of Text-Matching Software Used for Student Academic Integrity in Higher Education
Text-matching software has been used widely in higher education to reduce student plagiarism and support the development of students’ writing skills. This scoping review provides insights into the extant literature relating to commercial text-matching software (TMS) (e.g., Turnitin) use in postsecondary institutions. Our primary research question was “How is text-matching software used in postsecondary contexts?” Using a scoping review method, we…

An Institutional Self-Study of Text-Matching Software in a Canadian Graduate-Level Engineering Program
This institutional self-study investigated the use of text-matching software (TMS) to prevent plagiarism by students in a Canadian university that did not have an institutional license for TMS at the time of the study. Assignments from a graduate-level engineering course were analyzed using iThenticate®. During the initial phase of the study, similarity scores from the first student assignments ( N = 132) were collected to determine a baseline le…

Ethical considerations for research conducted with human participants in languages other than English
Considerations for conducting ethical research with human participants in languages other than English are addressed to some extent in regulatory and guiding statements for researchers, but in ways that are minimal or vague. In this article, I examine guiding documents for research ethics from four countries: the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA, with a view to analysing how the issue of research in other languages is addressed. Specific attenti…
Plagiarism
This mixed methods case study investigated faculty perspectives and practice around plagiarism in a Western Canadian faculty of education. Data sources included interviews, focus groups, and a survey. Findings showed that participants (N = 36) were disinclined to follow established procedures. Instead, they tended to deal with plagiarism in informal ways without reporting cases to administration, which resulted in a disconnect between policy and …
