  • The connection between distance learning profiles and achievement emotions in secondary mathematics education

Open Access•Anni Sydänmaanlakka, Jokke Häsä et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Psychology of…•2025

During the COVID-19 pandemic, distance learning became the dominant form of education, utilizing a variety of technological resources to activate students and facilitate independent learning. In this study, latent profile analysis was used to identify different distance learning profiles and analysis of covariance was used to analyze the relationships between identified profiles and students’ ( n = 552) achievement emotions in Finnish upper secon…

  • Teaching mathematics in innovative learning environments—The entangled tensions between the learning environment and pedagogy

Open Access•Riikka Alakoski, Anu Laine et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Education•2024

New school buildings are often designed for flexible innovative learning environments (ILEs) to support learning future skills better than before. However, little is known about the relationship between environment and pedagogy. This article examines the relationship between the environment and pedagogy from the perspective of primary school teachers in the context of teaching mathematics. We interviewed 26 teachers from 10 Finnish ILEs and did a…

  • Top Achievers in Mathematics in the End of Upper Secondary School

Open Access•Laura Niemi, Jari Metsämuuronen et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

Important questions regarding mathematical giftedness are how and when it is possible to identify. To be identified as gifted, the student must have natural potential but also an appropriate mix of motivation, support, and challenges. This study is based on longitudinal data following students from 3rd grade in primary school to the end of upper secondary school between 2005 and 2015. We focus on top achievers (

  • What can eye-tracking, combined with discourse analysis, teach us about the ineffectiveness of a group of students solving a geometric problem

    Open Access•Einat Heyd‐metzuyanim, Eeva Haataja et al.•ARTICLE•Instructional Science•2023

  • Scanning Signatures

    Open Access•Enrique García Moreno-Esteva, Anttoni Kervinen et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2020

In this article we discuss, as a proof of concept, how a network model can be used to analyse gaze tracking data coming from a preliminary experiment carried out in a biodiversity education research project. We discuss the network model, a simple directed graph, used to represent the gaze tracking data in a way that is meaningful for the study of students’ biodiversity observations. Our network model can be thought of as a scanning signature of h…

  • Big-fish-little-pond effect on achievement emotions in relation to mathematics performance and gender

Open Access•Marja Eliisa Holm, Johan Korhonen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This study investigated the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) on mathematics-related achievement emotions (enjoyment, pride, anger, anxiety, shame, hopelessness, and boredom) among adolescents (N = 1322) using multilevel modeling, controlling for the effects of gender and classroom size. The results indicated that only pride was influenced by the BFLPE. Hence, adolescents reported less pride in mathematically higher-performing classrooms (highe…

  • Teacher's visual attention when scaffolding collaborative mathematical problem solving

    Open Access•Eeva Haataja, Enrique García Moreno-Esteva et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching and Teacher Education•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Teachers' role in scaffolding students' problem-solving process is crucial. New technology provides researchers with possibilities to explore this aspect of teaching from the viewpoint of teacher attention. The aim of this mixed-method case study was to investigate the relation between a teacher's scaffolding intentions and his gaze behavior. The data was collected during a mathematics lesson using mobile gaze tracking devices, stationary video c…

  • Third Graders' Perceptions on Moral Behaviour on Bullying If They Had the Infinite Powers of Superhero Defenders

    Open Access•Juha Johansson, Markku S Hannula•ARTICLE•Education Research International•2012

Bullying is a serious moral concern affecting the victim's welfare and achievement in school. Lately, research on bullying phenomenon has led to successful procedures in which passive bystanders are asked to become defenders of the victims of bullying. This case study explores children's perceptions on moral behaviour on bullying and, moreover, what type of moral voice they would express if they had the infinite powers and means of superhero defe…
