  • Structures, song traditions, fears and fantasies

James Mullen, John Mullen•ARTICLE•Popular Music History•2026

Popular song does not illustrate History with a capital H, played out elsewhere in muddy trenches, grimy factories or oak-panelled offices. On the contrary, it involves a series of mass activities which are as much a part of history as are working and fighting. This contribution aims at assessing the popular love song repertoires in Britain and in France during the First World War, defining popular song, for our present purposes, simply as the so…

  • Underground and Mainstream in Cultural Production in Britain and Ireland since 1979

Open Access•James Mullen, John Mullen et al.•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2021

I want to sell tracks but at the same time I want to stay true to the music I like. This is why I love the underground scene because they can stay true to what they want to do. Columbus "Rahki" Smith, The Liberator Magazine, 10.1 n°25, 2011. If she could see the beauty of this underground world, and appreciate what it means: the music, the dancing, the feeling of fingertips and lips, like a moment of flight after a lifetime of crawling.Lauren Oli…

  • Insider Interviews

Open Access•James Mullen, John Mullen et al.•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2021

We did not want to miss out on a view of underground music which does not come from Popular Music Studies in universities, but from practitioners and aficionados on the ground. We were able to interview two people from the North of England: Stephen Gilbert, a tremendously enthusiastic follower of new popular music, who lives in Blackpool, and Jack Simpson, a professional who encourages the production of avant-garde popular music in Leeds. Intervi…

David Hendy is Professor of Media and Cultural History at the University of Sussex. He is the author of Noise: a Human History of Sound and Listening, which was also a BBC Radio 4 documentary series. He is currently working on a new, authorized history of the BBC, which will be published for the BBC's Centenary in 2022. • What Questions Need to Be Asked about the History of the BBC

Open Access•James Mullen, John Mullen•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2021

The BBC produced, between 1922 and 1995, over a million hours of programmes. In the face of such a massive corpus, strategies for understanding and recounting BBC history are necessarily challenging, and there is a real danger of being satisfied with a simplified, institutional, top-down approach. This contribution takes us on a tour of different currents of historical and cultural research to suggest some particularly fruitful questions about th…

  • Ecosocial Philosophy of Education

Open Access•Jani Pulkki, Jan Varpanen et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Philosophy and Education•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 32

While human beings generally act prosocially towards one another — contra a Hobbesian “war of all against all” — this basic social courtesy tends not to be extended to our relations with the more-than-human world. Educational philosophy is largely grounded in a worldview that privileges human-centered conceptions of the self, valuing its own opinions with little regard for the ecological realities undergirding it. This hyper-separation from the ‘…

  • Strange loops, oedipal logic, and an apophatic ecology

    Open Access•Arto Saari, James Mullen•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 11

There are currently two broad forms of critique undergirding environmental education theories: the first is one of subtraction from perceived reality as it seeks to reveal and remove illusions and ideologies, while the other takes the inverse form of adding to reality in the form of investigating how matter comes to matter. We suggest a third form that explores the paradoxical and uncanny aspects of ecological awareness and assumes an apophatic, …

  • Musicians, singers and other artistes as workers in the British music hall, 1900–1918

James Mullen, John Mullen•CHAPTER•Music Profession in Britain,…•2018

The music hall in Britain has an image as old-time, classless entertainment, as commemorated in the long-running television show, The Good Old Days. This chapter looks at the development of music hall working conditions and union organization from 1900 to 1920, concentrating on three key moments: the turn of the century, the great London strike of 1907, and the years of the First World War. A survey of the industry in 1900 shows that there was a …

  • Dark places

    Arto Saari, James Mullen•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 21

Escalating ecological events like global warming haunt our lived experience of place and demand thinking the concept anew in environmental education research. Using Timothy Morton’s notions of hyperobjects and dark ecology as a springboard, we articulate the uncanny—the withdrawn, unknowable, excessive and anxiety-provoking—aspects of place that events like global warming disclose for place-based pedagogies. Given the advent of hyperobjects as a …

  • What Can Political Rock Do? A Discussion Based on the Example of the Tom Robinson Band 1976-1979

Open Access•James Mullen, John Mullen•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2017

The Tom Robinson Band had a distinctive approach to political rock music, in their brief career at the end of the nineteen seventies. Neither underground counter-culture nor stadium charity rock, they tried to encourage grassroots involvement in politics as well as to spread their ideas widely, through the pop charts if necessary. This article takes the band as an example to pose the wider question “What Can Political Rock do?”, and develops an a…

  • UK Popular Music and Society in the 1970s

Open Access•James Mullen, John Mullen•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2017

Commentators are unanimous about the important role of the UK in the 1970s in the history of popular music. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, the Sex Pistols and the Police : perhaps no other country produced as many influential artistes in this decade. Yet there has generally been a separation between « serious » historical analyses of the decade’s social history and examinations of its musical legacy. This article attempts to look at th…
