Bidding on Price and Quality
We experimentally study procurement auctions when both quality and price matter. We compare two treatments where sellers compete on one dimension only (price or quality), with three treatments where sellers submit a price-quality bid and the winner is determined by a scoring rule that combines the two offers. We find that, in the scoring rule treatments, efficiency and buyer’s utility are lower than predicted. Estimates from a Quantal Response Eq…
Breaking the bag habit
Whistleblowing and tax evasion
In a tax compliance experiment we manipulate various dimensions to isolate the effects of whistleblowing: whether incomes are homogeneous or heterogeneous; whether whistleblowing is permitted or not; and whether subjects have complete or incomplete information about others’ tax evasion. Under complete information, we find that whistleblowing has a strong impact on compliance, reducing the proportion of concealed income and increasing the precisio…

Cervical cancer screening invitations in low and middle income countries
Life satisfaction of immigrants
To investigate empirically the association between a direct measure of assimilation with a host culture and immigrants’ subjective well-being, this study uses data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. A positive, significant association arises between cultural assimilation and immigrants’ life satisfaction, even after controlling for several potential confounding factors, such as immigrants’ individual (demographic and socio-economic) characteri…
Reference dependent preferences, hedonic adaptation and tax evasion
Elections and Deceptions
Traditionally, the virtue of democratic elections has been seen in their role as means of screening and sanctioning shirking public officials. This article proposes a novel rationale for elections and political campaigns considering that candidates incur psychological costs of lying, in particular from breaking campaign promises. These nonpecuniary costs imply that campaigns influence subsequent behavior, even in the absence of reputational or im…
Exploring the absolutist vs relativist perception of poverty using a cross-country questionnaire survey
Age, Health and Life Satisfaction Among Older Europeans
In this paper we investigate how age affects the self-reported level of life satisfaction among the elderly in Europe. By using a vignette approach, we find evidence that age influences life satisfaction through two counterbalancing channels. On the one hand, controlling for the effects of all other variables, the own perceived level of life satisfaction increases with age. On the other hand, given the same true level of life satisfaction, older …
A Prize to Give for
This article investigates fund-raising mechanisms based on a prize as a way to overcome free riding in the private provision of public goods. We focus on an environment characterised by income heterogeneity and incomplete information about income levels. Our analysis compares experimentally the performance of a lottery, an all-pay auction and a benchmark voluntary contribution mechanism. We find that prize-based mechanisms perform better than vol…
