Literature;“It’s Like It’s from a Movie or Something”: Narrative Instability, Remediation, and Cultural Prestige in the Indie Video Games Hotline Miami and Katana Zero
This article identifies a trend in contemporary indie video games to consciously obfuscate the process of narrative understanding, which it investigates as part of a transmedia embrace of ‘narrative instability.’ It argues that a number of indie video games have recently taken up narratively unstable elements in order to self-reflexively probe their own narrative capabilities. In addition, these narrative and discursive ambitions are used as a me…
The Downfall of a Hero: The Vilification of Philippe Pétain
The contribution follows Philippe Pétain on his path from hero to villain during his reign over Vichy France (1940–1944). Over the course of the Second World War, the public image of Pétain oscillated between hero and traitor. For the Vichy regime, the heroic version of the head of state had to prevail, because he was the most important linchpin of the new political system. This was all too obvious for the enemies of Vichy, and as a result, the v…

What Works to Increase Charitable Donations? A Meta-Review with Meta-Meta-Analysis
Many charities rely on donations to support their work addressing some of the world’s most pressing problems. We conducted a meta-review to determine what interventions work to increase charitable donations. We found 21 systematic reviews incorporating 1339 primary studies and over 2,139,938 participants. Our meta-meta-analysis estimated the average effect of an intervention on charitable donation size and incidence: r = 0.08 (95% CI [0.03, 0.12]…
They Don't Make Anything Like They Used To: Visual, Narrative, and Ideological Nostalgia for the West(ern) in Westworld (2016)
In this article, we examine the first season of HBO’s TV show Westworld (2016-present) to analyse whether and how it imagines the American West nostalgically. From the perspective of (American) literary and cultural studies, we introduce a concept of nostalgia as a cultural style that understands nostalgia as situated on a continuum, as potentially located on a cultural artefact or text’s (audio)visual, narrative, and ideological levels, and as d…
Liberty for Androids: Player Choice, Politics, and Populism in Detroit: Become Human
In this article, I analyze the 2018 video game Detroit: Become Human as a potentially political text from the perspective of literary and cultural studies. I argue that it features and presents narrative choices in a way that encourages players to make decisions not solely for personal or empathetic reasons but also through a political contemplation, and I contend that the manner in which the game narratively presents individual agency and populi…
The Joystick in the Garden: Video Games, American Studies, and Politics
In The Machine in the Garden (1964), Leo Marx launched an inquiry into how the United States had labored to sustain an old, whitewashed, Edenic image of the “New World” and how this image stood at odds with relentless waves of technological advances that have helped define modern America: at once reveling in and battling the clutches of the machine. At its core, The Machine in the Garden probed the nation’s centuries-long coming-to-terms with the…
Dystopia in the Skies: Negotiating Justice and Morality on Screen in the Video Game BioShock Infinite
In this article, I analyze the 2013 video game BioShock Infinite as a popular site for the visual display of (in)justice and (im)morality. I contend that it is not so much the game’s ludic elements but its visuality that most forcefully makes a compelling argument against the oppression and discrimination found in the game’s fictional world, the city of Columbia. The game’s visual elements—as part of its larger plot, its narrative background, and…

The Macho Magister Ludi: An Analysis of Ernest Gellner's Thought-Style
Ernest Gellner was, by all accounts, one of the most unconventional thinkers of the twentieth century. Not only was the content of his theories often strikingly original, but he also arrived at them by use of a singularly personal thought-style. The article describes the most salient features of this thought-style: his quest for overviews, on the one hand, and for penetrating and unexpected insights, on the other, his opposition to what he percei…

Legitimacy of European Citizenship
eu citizens living in an eu member state of which they are not nationals may participate in local elections. Based on a survey conducted in three member states of the eu we analyze the legitimacy of this core element of European citizenship. Firstly, we examine the extent to which European citizens support the Europeanisation of local voting rights. The results show that about two-thirds of citizens accept these rights. Secondly, we analyze wheth…
On the Assessment of ‘Civilizations’ in Political Culture Research. Criticism and Alternative
Since Huntington proclaimed the political relevance of ‘civilizations’, the concept has been popular in political culture research. However, it lacks precision and is used inconsistently in interpreting global cultural (dis)similarities. This article aims to illustrate how these flaws can be avoided. First, the broad rubric of civilization is specified and differentiated from political culture. Then, the (dis)similarities of 39 countries in terms…
