Differences Between Traditional and Distance Education Academic Performances
This meta-analysis research estimated and compared the differences between the academic performance of students enrolled in distance education courses relative to those enrolled in traditional settings, as demonstrated by their final course grades/ scores within the 1990-2002 period. Eighty-six experimental and quasi-experimental studies met the established inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis (including data from over 15,000 participating st…
Faculty Attitudes Toward Institutional Competitive Strategies in U.S. Research Universities
The present study aims at assessing faculty attitudes toward institutional competitive strategies in U.S. research universities and at exploring some of the correlates of these attitudes. A stratified random sample of 40 U.S. research university departments, 10 each in physics, sociology, electrical engineering, and education was surveyed by means of a questionnaire. The major findings of this study suggest that faculty members at research univer…

Examination of Alternative Models of Students’ Assessment of Their College
This study examines the relationship between the discriminable components of quality of learning experiences (that is, resources, content, learning flexibility, student‐faculty contact, and involvement) and students’ summative assessment of their college. The relative explanatory powers of three alternative combinatory models — the compensatory (linear‐additive), conjunctive, and disjunctive — are tested for. undergraduate students from hard and …
Achievement Motivation Factors and Students' College Outcomes
The present study develops new measures of students' achievement motivation and examines the relationships between these measures and indicators of students' behavioral and college outcomes. Analysis yields moderate positive association of most aspects of achievement motivation with college outcomes. These relationships are quite strong for students' accomplishment and grades and weaker for commitment, assessment, and involvement. The best correl…
Comparison of Six Lengths of Rating Scales
The characteristics of rating scales are very important in questionnaires on attitudes and satisfaction. In the construction of a rating scale, one is often concerned about the number of rating categories. Effects of scale length on relationships among variables are explored through a study of students' satisfaction with college instruction. Six rating scales of length n are compared, for n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10. The results indicate that deviation…
A Contingency Approach for Understanding Equity Theory and Its Predictions
This study is an empirical examination of equity theory as a predictor of pay satisfaction among managers. A contingency model is developed and confirmed. The basic idea is that equity theory does not apply universally for all situations, but is rather restricted to tasks with a high level of perceived certainty. In other situations, where information concerning the tasks and their characteristics is quite unpredictable and less certain, the asse…
Two-Factor Model of Managers' Work Orientation and its Predictions
This study develops a model which explains the role of specific and global work orientations in predicting extrinsic and intrinsic work attitudes. Four hypotheses were derived from the model, based on the congruence between extrinsic work attitudes and specific orientation on one hand, and between intrinsic work attitudes and global orientation on the other hand. These hypotheses were tested and verified for managers

A Three Facet Model of Scientific Development
Science is a structured endeavor which, for the most part, is undertaken within the context of formal organization. To understand the development of science, one must understand both the nature of science and the dynamics of organizations. Our purpose is to derive a model of scientific development reflective of both the uniqueness of science and organizational dynamics. The basic idea is that problems, decision making and policy questions in the …
