Exploring Digital Multimodal Ensembles and Monomodal Expository Essays
Although many teacher/researchers have expressed enthusiasm about the benefits of digital multimodal literacies, empirical evidence of the value of engagement with multimodal ensembles for L2 students as authors and readers is limited. This study compared the quality of digital multimodal composing (DMC) and monomodal writing and explored the impact of both on readers' new knowledge building. Fifty Korean university EFL students were assigned to …

Considering what we know and need to know about second language writing
The relatively young field of second language (L2) writing has come a long way in the past few decades but still has far to go if it wishes to broaden its research foci to consider a greater diversity of writing contexts. As a largely pedagogically-motivated area, L2 writing has so far mainly focused on writing in English as a second language, especially that of young adults in English-medium universities. Far less investigated by L2 writing rese…

English for Specific Purposes
This overview of the current state of English for specific purposes (ESP) begins by surveying ongoing debates on key topics: needs assessment and its goals, specificity in instructional methods, and the role of subject knowledge in instructor expertise. Two strands of current theory and research are next surveyed, namely, genre theory and corpus-enhanced genre studies, and critical pedagogy and ethnographies, followed by examples of research and …
Butches, Bullies and Buffoons
The purpose of this study was to examine the cinematic images of physical educators during the past decade. This study is approached from two perspectives: (a) framing and (b) social cognition. Framing, an approach to media studies most often reserved for critical analysis of news, provides useful generalities for a formative study of movie images, which directs explicit attention toward the construction and use of media frames. Contemporary soci…

Race and Gender Differences in the Sources of Students’ Self‐schemata for Sport and Physical Activities
The most recent United States Surgeon General's report underscores the need for increased levels of regular physical activity in the US population in general, and in minorities and women in particular. Insight into variations in participation patterns in particular sports and physical activities may provide insight into the differing activity levels in women and minorities. Resent research, utilizing self‐schemata conceptual framework, indicates …

Race and Gender Differences in Sport Participation as a Function of Self-Schema
The present investigation studied the influence of race and gender on sport and physical activity choices by regarding specific sport and physical activities as appropriate for participation or self-defining for race and gender groups. The study was designed to confirm the existence of self-schemata for sport and physical activities. A computer-generated instrument was employed to assess the existence and strength of self-schemata. Results of log…

Gender Differences in Children's Conceptions of Competence and Motivation in Physical Education
This study investigated the competence perceptions and motivational beliefs of 50 physical education students who had adopted stereotypical perceptions of two gender oriented physical activities, dance and basketball. Specifically, the research asked students to explain why basketball is sometimes viewed as more appropriate for boys and dance is viewed as more appropriate for girls. The research also aimed to understand why students think they wi…
