Comparison of Nominal Recall (Standard) and Multiple-Choice Methods for Administration of Wisc—R Information Subtest
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC--R) Information subtest was administered to learning disabled children using two methods of administration, the standard (recall) method and a multiple-choice format. Those children who were tested first with the multiple-choice format and subsequently with the standard format did better on the standard format than expected. This preliminary study suggests a learning effect of such multi…
Depression, Learning Disability, and School Behavior Problems
It is possible that recurrent depression (primary affective illness) is the most significant variable related to school problems of a behavioral nature in children manifesting developmental specific learning disabilities. The association of school problems and depression was investigated at a private school for children with developmental specific learning disabilities. These children were of normal intelligence and were free of primary conduct o…
Terminal Drop” as a Sign of Depression in Elderly Individuals
Cognitive deterioration or “terminal drop” has been associated with impending death in elderly individuals. The neuropsychological test pattern of this cognitive disturbance is similar to that noted in patients with major depressive disorder. This similarity has led to the hypothesis that “terminal drop” may be a sign of masked depression in the elderly. Anti-depressant therapy (pharmacotherapy or electroconvulsive therapy) has been shown to impr…
Psychological Processes Associated with Premature Death in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Intrafamilial and professional-family relationships are adversely affected by the progressive deterioration and inevitable death of a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Professionals dealing with these families need to (1) develop an integrated, family systems approach to the dystrophic child's situation, (2) give the dystrophic child permission to “experiment” with life, and (3) provide straightforward information regarding the disease proc…
Learning disability and childhood depression
Lateralized cerebral dysfunction in children is associated with specific clusters of cognitive deficits that impair learning. Right hemisphere learning disabilities may be etiologically related to childhood endogenous depressive illness, while left hemisphere learning disabilities may be reversibly worsened by such depression. It is suggested that diagnostic evaluation of learning disability should routinely include a search for childhood depress…
