  • Feminist Historical Fiction or Commercial Entertainment? (In)authenticity in Philippa Gregory’s Portrayal of Catherine of Aragon

Open Access•José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Atlantis Journal of the Spanish…•2025

Philippa Gregory claims to be a “feminist, radical historian” (Ágútsdóttir 2015, 144) who re-examines patriarchal historical discourse. This article explores Gregory’s representation of Catherine of Aragon, placing Gregory within Britain’s historical novel tradition and arguing for a joint analysis of three novels—The Constant Princess (2005), The King’s Curse (2014) and Three Sisters, Three Queens (2016). Informed by Carr’s model of feminist emp…

  • On strangers sleuthing and flâneurs reading. The subversive power of C. J. Sansom’s historical crime fiction

    José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2024

This article provides an analysis of C. J. Sansom’s Matthew Shardlake novels (2003–2018), considering the fact that both crime and historical fiction may be used to reconceptualise collective memory in subversive ways, and with important implications for both genres. I will attempt to demonstrate that Sansom’s narrative illustrates the shift in recent crime fiction from the crime itself to the historical conditions of its setting. As a result, He…

The corpus analysed includes the show's first four seasons and 2009 special, which are all the Benidorm materials available on DVD at the time of writing. • Re-imagining cultural identity

José Igor Prieto Arranz, María Juan-Garau et al.•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 12

The rise of English as an international language (EIL) has brought to light the needs of those who speak it as an additional language. This has in turn radically reshaped the role of culture in the EIL classroom, which may now aim at developing critical transcultural awareness. By reporting on a joint initiative undertaken by three schools in two countries, the ‘EIL in Poland and Spain’ blog project, this article explores how a transcultural curr…

  • Rural, White and Straight. The ETC's Vision of England

José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The standard image of England has been traditionally dominated by bucolic, semi-rural, quintessentially southern Englishness. This paper examines England's current tourist promotional materials only to confirm that these largely conform to the above-mentioned traditional image. However, it also goes further to analyse sexuality and race issues which, we shall argue, lie at the heart of not only Englishness itself but also the difference between t…

  • Two Markets, Two Scotlands? Gender and Race in STB's 'Othered' Scottishness

José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2004•Cited by: 1

The aim of the present work is to study the visual representation of hosts and guests in Scottish tourist brochures, paying special attention to questions of both gender and race, in order to discuss how such representations may relate to the notions of Scottishness and, ultimately, Britishness. Evidence will be provided of the use of what might be referred to as 'ethnic nationalism' on the part of some promotional materials. Moreover, all materi…

  • Forgiven, not Forgotten

Open Access•José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Revista Alicantina de Estudios…•2004

Although frequently discarded and despised in the 20th century, translation now seems to find wider acceptance within the Second Language Teaching (SLT) field. However, it still has a long way to go before recovering its due place in the L2 classroom. The aim of this paper is to suggest a number of translation (and interpreting)-based activities covering the different competence levels, thus showing that communicative content and translation can …

Such awardwinning materials will be analysed in the present work, which places special emphasis on their two main features: on the one hand, their embedded intertext…

  • Liaison interpreting in the ELF classroom

Open Access•José Igor Prieto Arranz•ARTICLE•Revista Alicantina de Estudios…•2002

Leaving aside old prejudices against the use of translation in foreign language teaching, the new integrative approaches show how translation (and interpreting)-based activities can also potentially fall into the communicative task category. Liaison interpreting is one such and it is our aim in this paper to investigate how it works with a group of 4th year English Philology students at the University of Oviedo. Results being clearly positive, an…
