  • Predictors of Initial and Recurrent Hospitalization Among People Living with HIV: A Longitudinal Cohort Study

Open Access•Aaron S Breslow, Ying Jin et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

Hospitalization remains a significant concern among people living with HIV (PLWH), particularly when admissions are recurrent. While prior research has identified psychiatric comorbidities and HIV disease severity as predictors of initial hospitalization, less is known about the factors that drive repeated hospitalizations in the modern treatment era. This study examined psychiatric, demographic, and HIV-related predictors of first and subsequent…

  • Impact of a grace period on student submission behaviour and academic performance

Open Access•Darryl J Cochrane, Bevan Erueti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Further and Higher…•2026

Fixed assessment deadlines are widely used in higher education but may disadvantage students whose learning is disrupted by competing academic, work, or personal demands. This study examined whether introducing an automatic, penalty-free grace period influences assessment submission behaviour and academic performance in an online undergraduate course. One hundred and ninety-eight students enrolled in a fully online first-year Health Communication…

  • China’s energy transition through a resource–fiscal–environmental lens: Economic drivers and R&D threshold mediation

Open Access•Qian He, Ying Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

This study examines the relationship between macroeconomic drivers and environmental outcomes, with a specific focus on China over the period 1990–2023. The research investigates how trade openness, structural transformation, and government effectiveness influence coal usage, energy depletion costs, and education spending, and how these factors ultimately impact CO2 emissions and energy intensity. Using a multi-stage analytical approach, includin…

  • From urban modelling to city digital twins – Reflections from the applied urban modelling (AUM) symposia

Open Access•Li Wan, Ying Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2026

City digital twins (CDTs), as digital replica of urban systems and development processes, have been heralded as the next-generation technology for urban planning and management. Arguably, the concept of CDTs is not new. Prior to CDTs, applied urban modelling has been playing a pivot role in supporting city and infrastructure planning since the 1960s. Examining CDTs in relation to conventional urban models can thus offer valuable insights into the…

    Open Access•Ying Jin, D Tay•ARTICLE•Discourse Context & Media•2025•References: 33

The participatory affordance of web platforms has encouraged ordinary users’ participation in sociopolitical issues and opened up new channels for public opinion expression, particularly to blame authorities for their perceived wrongdoings. The current critical discourse analysis study contributes to this scholarship by investigating bottom-up discursive practices on user-generated texts on Weibo, the most widely used social media website in Chin…

  • Reexamining the Impact of Locations on Leaving the Parental Home and Choosing New Locations: Evidence From a New Joint Choice Model

Open Access•Yusi Luo, Ling Li et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2025•References: 9

Previous models for leaving the parental home mainly focus on the influence of local factors while overlooking how opportunities and costs associated with living outside the local area influence the decision to leave. To address this gap, this paper develops a new joint model with a two‐tier nested logit structure for young people's decisions to remain at home or leave, as well as to choose subsequent residential destinations. This model accounts…

  • A Comparison of Uniform DIF Effect Size Estimators Under the MIMIC and Rasch Models

Open Access•Ying Jin, Nicholas D Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2013

The Rasch model, a member of a larger group of models within item response theory, is widely used in empirical studies. Detection of uniform differential item functioning (DIF) within the Rasch model typically employs null hypothesis testing with a concomitant consideration of effect size (e.g., signed area [SA]). Parametric equivalence between confirmatory factor analysis under the multiple indicators, multiple causes (MIMIC) model and the Rasch…

The current study extended previous research by comparing the performance of DIF methods when ρ of the studied item was less than…

Robust calibration and validation of applied urban models are prerequisites for their successful, policy-cogent use. This is particularly important today when expert assessment is questioned and closely scrutinized. This paper proposes a new model calibration-validation strategy based on a spatial equilibrium model that incorporates multiple time horizons, such that the predictive capabilities of the model can be empirically tested. The model is …

  • Incorporating Planning Intelligence into Deep Learning: A Planning Support Tool for Street Network Design

Zhou Fang, Ying Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Technology•2021

Deep learning applications in shaping ad hoc planning proposals are limited by the difficulty of integrating professional knowledge about cities with artificial intelligence. We propose a novel, complementary use of deep neural networks and planning guidance to automate street network generation that can be context-aware, learning-based, and user-guided. The model tests suggest that the incorporation of planning knowledge (e.g., road junctions an…
