  • La religion dans l’œuvre de Ricœur. Dialogue avec Yasuhiko Sugimura

    Open Access•Daniel Frey•ARTICLE•Études Ricoeuriennes / Ricoeur…•2022

Yasuhiko Sugimura’s review of my book La Religion dans la philosophie (Hermann, 2021) for the present issue of Études Ricœuriennes / Ricoeur Studies affords me an opportunity to return to my intention in this work. I verify the heuristic hypothesis that the complex relationship that Ricoeur’s philosophy established with religion can be explained by a process of secularization [laïcisation] of Ricoeur’s religious convictions. In dialogue with the …

  • Kinship, gender and the spiritual economy in medieval Central European Towns

    Open Access•Christina Lutter, Daniel Frey et al.•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 20

The present contribution starts from the debate about kinship as a social institution in medieval Europe initiated by Jack Goody's pioneering anthropological work in the 1980s and drawn upon by historians and anthropologists alike. We focus on the aspect of the allegedly systematic separation of kinship from the organization of memory of the dead brought about by the establishment of Christianity. However, throughout the European Middle Ages fami…

  • What Is the Epistemic Function of Highly Idealized Agent-Based Models of Scientific Inquiry

    Open Access•Daniel Frey, Dunja Šešelja•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2018•Cited by: 16•References: 41

In this paper we examine the epistemic value of highly idealized agent-based models (ABMs) of social aspects of scientific inquiry. On the one hand, we argue that taking the results of such simulations as informative of actual scientific inquiry is unwarranted, at least for the class of models proposed in recent literature. Moreover, we argue that a weaker approach, which takes these models as providing only “how-possibly” explanations, does not …

  • Robustness and Idealizations in Agent-Based Models of Scientific Interaction

    Open Access•Daniel Frey, Dunja Šešelja•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2018•Cited by: 18•References: 1

The article presents an agent-based model (ABM) of scientific interaction aimed at examining how different degrees of connectedness of scientists impact their efficiency in knowledge acquisition. The model is built on the basis of Zollman’s ([2010]) ABM by changing some of its idealizing assumptions that concern the representation of the central notions underlying the model: epistemic success of the rivalling scientific theories, scientific inter…

  • Paul Ricœur, philosophe et protestant

    Daniel Frey•ARTICLE•Esprit•2017

EnglishPaul Ricœur claimed a secular thinking but never denied being protestant and the religious grounding of his questions. His early work on the will in particular are characterized by Christian existentialism. francaisPaul Ricœur revendiquait une pensee laique mais n’a jamais renie le protestant en lui, c’est-a-dire l’ancrage religieux de ses interrogations.

The Profession of faith of the Savoyard vicar indisputably is that of Rousseau himself. This paper shows that in this profession the philosopher lays out his religious thought in a more systematic way than in his other writings. Starting with the tragic problem of religious intolerance, he defends the possibility to know God by means of a natural theology opposed both to atheist materialism and to the claim of whatever revelation. However, the pr…

  • Engineering Design Thinking, Teaching, and Learning

    Open Access•Clive L Dym, Alice M Agogino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Engineering Education•2005

This paper is based on the premises that the purpose of engineering education is to graduate engineers who can design, and that design thinking is complex. The paper begins by briefly reviewing the history and role of design in the engineering curriculum. Several dimensions of design thinking are then detailed, explaining why design is hard to learn and harder still to teach, and outlining the research available on how well design thinking skills…

The biblical hermeneutics of Paul Ricœur has for a long time been characterized by a model of comprehension within which (structural) explanation was a strong exigiency. This model was due to the fact that his general hermenutics of texts had the Leitmotiv «to explain in order to understand ». Through reading the work of N. F rye (The Great Code), the philosopher moves to a more flexible, model of comprehension : to understand is now a joint act …
