  • Rediscovering visual sociology, once again

    Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This essay explores four different versions of visual sociology – and a fifth that centers on their relatedness – that scholar-practitioners frequently have to navigate, acknowledge or otherwise attend to in their own research and teaching. Over the past five decades, the first four became familiar to me through my own engagement in visual sociology, and the fifth emerged while writing this essay. Taken together, these different versions of visua…

  • Visible materials, visualised theory and images of social research

    Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2006

Reciprocal relationships between visualising and seeing undergird all empirical investigations, but they are frequently neglected. That neglect leads to distortions in how social researchers think about the visual dimensions of their data, the visual challenge of communicating their research to others, and the images and visualisations that guide their theorising. Paying more attention to these elements can enrich our understanding of culture and…

  • Constructing Credible Images: Documentary Studies, Social Research, and Visual Studies

    Open Access•Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Documentary photographers and visual social researchers both rely on visual, real-world data but differ in how they address three key challenges: creating empirically credible images of culture and social life, framing empirical observations to highlight new knowledge, and challenging existing social theory. A close look at these shared challenges and contrasting conventions recommends exemplary documentary studies as an empirically viable altern…

  • Contrasting images, complementary trajectories: Sociology, visual sociology and visual research

    Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2002

Recent books by Jon Prosser (Image-based Research 1998) and by Michael Emmison and Philip Smith (Researching the Visual 2000) recommend increased research attention to the visual dimensions of culture and social life, but their contrasting perspectives raise questions about how research of this sort can be pursued most productively: as a strand or dimension of sociological inquiry or through cross-disciplinary work in qualitative research or cult…

    Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•Visual Sociology•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Social scientists refer routinely to a range of social and cultural contexts in trying to understand children's lives, but this range may not include what children think or say about what they do. In this article, I examine how two girls thought about their efforts to mummify a Barbie Doll as part of a school project. Attending to what the girls said about their project led me to regard strings of related activities—as defined by kids—as an impor…

  • Ignorance in Educational Research Or, How Can You Not Know That

    Open Access•Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1993•Cited by: 8•References: 36

In this article I argue that ignorance is a better criterion than truth for determining the usefulness of knowledge generated through different forms of educational research. This argument has implications for how we conceptualize educational research, how we teach it, and how we frame and support relationships between researchers and their subjects. The argument draws on a distinction between "blind spots" and "blank spots," and it is supported …

    Open Access•Jon Wagner, Jon C Wagner•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1980•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This paper describes the mechanisms by which individuals "dismiss" or render ineffective the symbolic attacks to which they are subjected. Among the strategies useful to this protection of the self are those which focus on the situation of the attack, the nature of the self, and the nature of the attacker. Characteristic of many of these individual approaches to defense is an underlying concept of the "real self, " a symbolic identity, the manife…

    Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Public service programs define one set of terms by which universities negotiate -- and must continue to negotiate -- their social and political contracts with the public. Over the past several decades, these contracts have been challenged by ongoing social and technological change [28, 45], by internal changes in the structure of the university [10, 28, 44], and by the need to assimilate new generations of students and faculty members into campus…

    Open Access•Jon Wagner•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 31

Drawing on multiyear field observations of educational administrators, I examine several parallels between the work of educational administration and school ethnography. These parallels emerge in response to structural challenges faced by administrators who work in schools and other educational programs. The parallels themselves suggest several unexamined complementarities between ethnographic and administrative orientations toward the schools. T…
