Unpacking Household Engel Curves
Acknowledging that decision making does not happen at the household but at the individual level, can household Engel curves be safely estimated based solely on household-level data? Answering this question requires considering the intra-household Engel curves (IECs) and assessing how estimates of such IECs relate to standard household Engel curves estimates. Aggregating the IECs to the household level reveals confounding factors in standard house…

Chronic Illness Management in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Patients
In Canada, people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are at a greater risk of developing a chronic illness, and are more likely to experience adverse health effects and challenges in accessing high-quality care compared with Canadian-born individuals. This, in part, has been attributed to having inadequate access to information and resources needed to manage their illness(es). A qualitative descriptive design and induct…
Unpacking Household Engel Curves
The classic Working-Leser household Engel curve is unpacked to reveal individual budget allocations across commodities as a function of both individual and household total spending. Two main findings emerge on calibrating our model to an unusual sub-household dataset for Senegal. First, for all except education spending, our results are consistent with the separable structures found in two-stage bargaining and collective models of the household. …
Inequality, Poverty and the Intra-Household Allocation of Consumption in Senegal
Intra-household inequalities have long \n been a source of concern for policy design, but there is \n very little evidence. The current practice of ignoring \n inequality within households could lead to an \n underestimation of both overall inequality and poverty \n levels, as well as to the misclassification of some \n individuals as regards to their poverty status. Using a \n novel survey for Senegal in which consumption data were \n collected …
Household resources and individual strategies
The question of diverging interests and preferences within couples over the use of household resources and the consequences of these conflictual views has been present for a long time in the development literature, albeit in a somewhat scattered way. This paper selectively reviews the abundant literature that offers insights into the intra-household decision-making process, the strategies put in place by individuals to secure their access to priv…
Inequality, Poverty, and the Intra-Household Allocation of Consumption in Senegal
Intra-household inequalities have long been a source of concern for policy design, but there is very little evidence about their effects. The current practice of ignoring inequality within households could lead to an underestimation of both overall inequality and poverty levels, as well as to the misclassification of some individuals with regard to their poverty status. Using a novel survey for Senegal in which consumption data were collected at …

Child Fostering in Senegal
Child fostering is a practice widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa whereby children are temporarily sent to live with a host family. Using a rich household survey conducted in Senegal in 2006-7, the paper aims at describing the selection into fostering of both households and children and at examining the impact of fostering on the wellbeing of children (host, foster- and siblings left behind) measured through their school enrollment, labour and domes…

Household Risk Management in Senegal
This study explores risk management and risk coping by Senegalese households, focusing particularly on individual vulnerability to shocks within the household by (1) documenting the risks faced by households in Senegal by looking at the frequency and types of shocks that households are exposed to, as well as the positive and negative ways in which households cope; (2) assessing the impact of the shocks on household per capita consumption and on h…

A Micro-Decomposition Analysis of Aggregate Human Development Outcomes
We show how differences in aggregate human development outcomes over time and space can be additively decomposed into a pure mean income (growth) component, a component attributed to differences in the distribution of income, and components attributed to ‘non-income’ factors and differences in the model linking outcomes to income and non-income characteristics. The income effect at the micro level is modelled non-parametrically, so as to flexibly…
Educational Achievement and Socio-economic Background
This paper addresses the question of intergenerational schooling mobility in Senegal. We use an original survey conducted in 2003 that provides instruments to deal with the endogeneity of parent's education. In Senegal, school supply has been increasing a lot over the last decades, individuals who are now adults had different exposure to the schooling system, depending on where they lived when they were young and on their birth cohort. Hence, a f…

Does Early Bilingual Acquisition Affect Hemispheric Preferences during Simultaneous Interpretation
Based on data from an earlier study (Lambert 1993), and on a propositional approach developed by Lemieux (1995), who refined quality of interpretation measurements sufficiently to determine a right-ear superiority at the beginning of a message and a left-ear superiority at the end of a message, the present study went one step further to examine the role played by experience, age and age of bilinguality, all possible factors influencing the hemisp…

Shared Attention during Sight Translation, Sight Interpretation and Simultaneous Interpretation
This study set out to determine the types of processing involved when subjects perform sight translation compared to both sight interpretation and simultaneous interpretation, but more specifically whether performance is enhanced or hindered by the visual presentation of the material to be interpreted. Results indicated that both sight translation and sight interpretation yielded significantly higher performance scores than simultaneous interpret…

Focalized Attention on Input vs. Output during Simultaneous Interpretation
Selection Tests for Trainee Conference Interpreters
This preliminary study devised and tested a series of psychometric tests to facilitate selection of simultaneous and consecutive interpreter-trainee candidates. Twelve tests, based either on text materials, linguistic subskills or speed-stress, were correlated with judges' ratings of the final interpretation examination. Students who passed the exam had higher mean scores on all tests than those who failed. Test scores were positively inter-corre…
Shadowing
This article attempts to bridge the gap between the vocational aspects of simultaneous interpretation and the theoretical and empirical components of simultaneous interpretation by describing the benefits and the versatility of the shadowing technique when used as a pre-simultaneous training tool. Aspects of cognitive psychology and neuropsychological applications are incorporated in a variety of applied exercises
The Effect of Ear of Information Reception on the Proficiency of Simultaneous Interpretation
In an attempt to bring together information about simultaneous interpretation, on the one hand, and cerebral dominance, on the other, this study examines the relative proficiency of interpreters when processing information received through one ear or the other as opposed to two ears. Eighteen subjects (professional interpreters and interpretation students) simultaneously interpreted spoken passages from L2 to Ll: one passage was presented to the …

Conscious monitoring of attention during simultaneous interpretation
This study addresses for the first time on an experimental level the question of whether different modalities of conscious monitoring of attention (normal condition, attention focalization on the input, attention focalization on the output, condition with two voices) may affect the number and the type of mistakes made by simultaneous interpreters in different situations. The major results of the study are the following: (i) While the overall numb…
Teaching consecutive interpreting
The authors provide two perspectives on the teaching of consecutive interpreting: The pragmatic approach and the cognitive justification. Consecutive interpreting is described as requiring outstanding skills in language comprehension and production; the article provides relevant exercises to enhance these skills and features an overview of CI practice and teaching. It concludes with a list of references of published and non-published sources deal…
