Public Perceptions of Corporate Position-Taking on Abortion and Transgender Rights
Corporations regularly express preferences on questions of public policy. This can occur through costly actions like lobbying public officials, contributing money to candidates, and engaging in litigation. One less costly way of expressing policy preferences is by issuing statements of support for or in opposition to a given policy or government practice. In this article, we examine public perceptions of corporate position-taking to determine the…

Talking About Public Health With African American Men
While the past two decades have seen rapid advances in research demonstrating links between environmental health and reproductive capacity, African American men have largely been overlooked as study participants. To give voice to the perceptions of urban African American men, the present qualitative study conducted focus groups of men recruited from street- and internet-based advertisements in Washington, DC. Participants were asked for their per…

Disparities in achieving and sustaining viral suppression among a large cohort of HIV-infected persons in care – Washington, DC
One goal of the HIV care continuum is achieving viral suppression (VS), yet disparities in suppression exist among subpopulations of HIV-infected persons. We sought to identify disparities in both the ability to achieve and sustain VS among an urban cohort of HIV-infected persons in care. Data from HIV-infected persons enrolled at the 13 DC Cohort study clinical sites between January 2011 and June 2014 were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate l…

House/ball culture and adolescent African-American transgender persons and men who have sex with men
Transgender persons and young men of color who have sex with men (YMSM of color) have been severely affected by HIV in the USA. Houses and balls in the USA have historically been a primary meeting ground for YMSM of color and transgender people, offering an opportunity for HIV prevention activities. Houses provide a familial structure for YMSM of color and transgender people, while balls provide them with events at which they can congregate for s…
Redefining Retention
This study examines the process of discharge and treatment reentry for six participants who entered treatment voluntarily but were administratively discharged from methadone treatment programs. The participants completed semistructured interviews at treatment entry and at four, eight and 12 months post-treatment entry. Grounded theory methodology was used to examine the phenomenon of treatment reentry from the perspective of the patients, who oft…

Premature Discharge from Methadone Treatment
Longer retention in drug abuse treatment is associated with better patient outcomes, and research indicates the first 12 months of methadone treatment are critical to patient success. Nevertheless, large-scale multisite longitudinal studies over the past three decades indicate that the majority of patients drop out during the first year of methadone treatment. Through an examination of 42 qualitative interviews with patients prematurely discharge…
Incarceration and Opioid Withdrawal
Both heroin-addicted individuals and methadone maintenance patients are likely to face untreated opioid withdrawal while incarcerated. Limited research exists concerning the withdrawal experiences of addicted inmates and their impact on individuals' attitudes and plans concerning drug abuse treatment. In the present study, 53 opioid dependent adults (32 in methadone treatment and 21 out of treatment) were interviewed in an ethnographic investigat…
Targeted Sampling in Drug Abuse Research
Locating and recruiting out-of-treatment drug-dependent individuals for inclusion in research studies are important and challenging tasks. Targeted sampling, a technique to reach such populations, has been described in the substance abuse literature. However, this literature has generally lacked a recent detailed account of the procedures for planning and implementing targeted sampling. This article provides a review of the literature of targeted…
Getting clean and harm reduction
Many contemporary HIV prevention interventions targeting injection drug users (IDUs) have been implemented using Harm Reduction as a theoretical framework. Among drug-using individuals, however, the abstinence-based "getting clean" models espoused by Narcotics Anonymous and other widely adopted approaches to drug treatment are often more readily accepted. This paper describes an ethnographic examination of the ideological dichotomy between Harm R…
The Impact of Drug Use on Perceptions of Credibility in Indigenous Outreach Workers
The authors conducted an investigation of perceptions of outreach worker credibility using the social network members (N = 20) of indigenous outreach workers in an HIV/AIDS prevention intervention. The network members included in the study received semistructured interviews following the program's completion. Outreach workers who were not actively using illicit drugs were more likely to be described as credible than were those who were using drug…
Deglaciation of the Whitegull Lake Area, Labrador-Ungava
Ethnographic Process Evaluation
This study demonstrates an ethnographically critically informed process evaluation of piloting an HIV intervention program targeting injection drug users. The authors used systematic ethnographic methods to identify and evaluate the factors that facilitated or inhibited message diffusion. Findings indicated that communication patterns and strategies advocated in training sessions did not translate immediately into the outreach encounter in the dr…
Making the Switch to Digital Audio
In this article, the authors describe the process of converting from analog to digital audio data. They address the step-by-step decisions that they made in selecting hardware and software for recording and converting digital audio, issues of system integration, and cost considerations. The authors present a brief description of how digital audio is being used in their current research project and how it has enhanced the 'quality' of their qualit…

Ice-Push Ramparts in the George River Basin, Labrador-Ungava
Reports field work on ice-push ramparts in the Whitegull Lake area of Quebec Province (55 30 N, 64 15 W). Modes of formation of ramparts during the partial open water season are reviewed and examples illus. Raised shorelines described by Low (No 10377) are re-interpreted as possible ice-push ramparts. Comparison of the Labrador Peninsula lakes with proglacial lakes in Baffin Island may assist interpretation of these features

Group Cohesiveness as a Determinant of Success and Member Satisfaction in Team Performance
The effectiveness of sport teams in competition is dependent upon many factors, one of which is the ability of individual members to work together. The coach often refers to this ability as teamwork, togetherness, or morale, while the researcher refers to it as group integration or group cohesiveness. Physical educators and coaches alike have long postulated that the most effective team is not necessarily composed from a con1bination of the best …

The application of spatial data processing to land use conflict resolution in the lal lal water catchment of the Ballarat growth corridor
Land use conflict within the Lal Lal Water Catchment is between landowners, the Shire, the Water Board and those directing regional pressures for development. It is exacerbated by inconsistency in building permit appraisal outcomes. The deliberations involved would clearly have benefited from access to spatial data sets through use of a Geographical Information System (GIS) during applications appraisal, in that inconsistencies are most obvious w…
