Educational upgrading and labour market inequality at occupational maturity by social origin in Germany
Upgrading of educational qualifications and the effects of social origin in terms of wages: Descriptive insights and a decomposition analysis for Germany
The article examines whether formal educational upgrading after labour market entry attenuates or reinforces the association between social origin and wages in Germany. We use NEPS-SC6-ADIAB data for descriptive and decomposition analyses. The results show that the group of upgraders shows a steeper wage growth compared to non-upgraders. However, although upgrading patterns are somewhat socially selective, differences in upgrading do neither comp…
Non-completion of teacher education students. Educational and occupational pathways of persons who withdraw from a teacher education program in Germany
28 percent of students in teacher education programs do not complete them. • Most students switch programs within teacher education or to a non-teaching program. • Only small shares of the non-completers start employment or vocational training. • Perceptions of personal fit and performance are key reasons for non-completion. • Learning environments do not matter much as reasons for non-completion. The study examines non-completion events among ov…
Educational tracking and social inequalities in long-term labor market outcomes: Six countries in comparison
In this country-comparative study, we ask to what extent differentiation in secondary education accounts for the association between social origins and social destinations in adult age. We go beyond the widely applied formal definitions of educational tracking and particularly pay attention to country-specific approaches to educational differentiation. Our main expectation is that once we factor in these particularities, the degree to which educa…

Analysing Diversion Processes in German Secondary Education: School-Track Effects on Educational Aspirations
Educational aspirations can be regarded as a predictor of final educational attainment, rendering this construct highly relevant for analysing the development of educational inequalities in panel data settings. In the context of the German tracked secondary school system, we analysed school-track effects on the development of educational aspirations. Using data from five consecutive waves of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we selecte…
Diversion or Inclusion? Alternative Routes to Higher Education Eligibility and Inequality in Educational Attainment in Germany
In the 1960s, educational reforms have been initiated in Germany to make the rigid stratified school system more permeable. While maintaining between-school tracking in secondary education, several second-chance options have been introduced that established alternative routes to higher education. This study aims to evaluate whether these alternative routes were successful in reducing the levels of social inequality in both higher education eligib…

EMI in Germany: Qualitative Differentiation in a Tracked Education System
This article discusses effectively maintained inequality considering two different examples from the Germany education system: secondary school attainment and enrolment in highly ranked universities among freshmen. In our analyses of secondary school attainment, we investigate whether considering differentiation in upper secondary education leads to other conclusions than restricting the analyses to the conventional distinction between the tradit…
School tracking, educational mobility and inequality in German secondary education: Developments across cohorts
Secondary education is associated with a comparatively high level of inequality in Germany. This has often been attributed to the early ability-based between-school tracking in the German school system. However, as yet there has been no empirical evaluation of the actual impact of initial track placement on social inequality in final school attainment. Since educational reforms in the 1960s increased educational mobility after track placement, it…

Inequality in Transitions to Secondary School and Tertiary Education in Germany
In many countries, concern about socio-economic inequalities in educational attainment has focused on inequalities in test scores and grades. The presumption has been that the best way to reduce inequalities in educational outcomes is to reduce inequalities in performance. But is this presumption correct? Determined to Succeed? is the first book to offer a comprehensive cross-national examination of the roles of performance and choice in generati…

Early transitions and tertiary enrolment: The cumulative impact of primary and secondary effects on entering university in Germany
Our aim is to assess how the number of working-class students entering German universities can effectively be increased. Therefore, we estimate the proportion of students from the working class that would successfully enter university if certain policy interventions were in place to eliminate primary effects (performance differentials between social classes) and/or secondary effects (choice differentials net of performance) at different transitio…
Mechanisms of Social Inequality Development: Primary and Secondary Effects in the Transition to Tertiary Education Between 1976 and 2005
Despite educational expansion and decreasing social inequalities in access to upper secondary education, increasing social inequalities can be found in the transition from upper secondary to tertiary education in Germany. Drawing on Boudon’s distinction between primary and secondary effects of social origin, we describe two potential sources which can be considered responsible for the observed pattern: first, an increase in performance differenti…

Explaining the class gap in training: The role of employment relations and job characteristics
Existing studies consistently find a gap in further education between high‐ and low‐skilled workers, implying a gap in formal training between high‐ and low‐skilled classes. In this paper, we hypothesize that the most important reasons for differences between social classes in further education participation are grounded in job characteristics rather than worker characteristics. This is in line with theoretical foundations of the construction of …

Field of Study and Flexible Work: A Comparison between Germany and the UK
In this article, the relationship between study programs in higher education and the risk of holding a temporary contract is investigated in a comparative perspective. We find that the effects fields of study have on the type of contract can be better explained by their link to occupational positions than by field specificity differentials. Furthermore, fields of study are more important in explaining the individual risk of holding a temporary co…
