  • The Scholar and her Servants

    Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•India Review•2006

The hypothesis of the paper is twofold. By juxtaposing the two subject-positions of mistress and servant, moving between one and the other to highlight how each is largely constructed by the interaction, we illuminate the questions of margin and centre, silence and voice, and can ponder on how to do anthropology better. But secondly, to the work of several scholars who propose various approaches to these questions, I add the particular insight of…

  • Provincialism in Modern India

    Open Access•Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Provincialism', or the separation of inferior spaces from normative ones, is seen in this essay as a key trope for interpreting modern Indian history. Provincialism, or provinciality, is a space recognizable instantly. It is marked by slowness, by absence of the new and recent, by what is seen on the national level as a brake-effect in an otherwise promising march forwards. Cities, which is what I concentrate on in this essay, are characterizable…

  • Mothers and Non‐Mothers

    Open Access•Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This essay brings together and complicates three stories within South Asian education history by gendering them. Thus modern education was actively pursued by mothers for their sons; indigenous education should be understood as continuing at home; and women were crucial actors in men's reform and nationalism efforts through both collaboration and resistance. Gendered history should go beyond the separate story of girls and women, or the understan…

  • The Logic of Retribution

    Nita N Kumar, Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•African American Review•2003

Black Arts Movement of the 1960s has been criticized for substituting a neo-African for what was identified as Western essentialism. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is among those who have critiqued the Black Arts Movement for promoting a poetics rooted in a social realism, indeed, in a sort of mimeticism, in which the relation between art and life was a direct one (102). place of the sociopolitical and empirical binarism of and white, Gates advocates un…

  • Learning Modernity? The Technologies of Education in India

    Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•Autrepart•2001

    Open Access•Nita Kumar•ARTICLE•The Indian Economic & Social…•1992•Cited by: 1

While debating between different titles for this paper, I found myself struggling to keep 'Ramlila' out of the name. For me my paper was about serious things: gender categories and their sustenance, political domination and resistance, negotiated constitutions of rationality and decency; not, as might seem from a title 'Ramlila', about a traditional performance in dusty spaces repeating a familiar, reactionary myth. The recognition of my dilemma …
