  • State Covid ‐19 Policy Configurations and Registered Nurse Employment Recovery: A Mixed‐Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis of U.S. States and the District of Columbia (2021–2022)

Open Access•Michael Foley, John Shaw et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2026

RN employment rebounded unevenly across the states of the U.S. after the acute phase of COVID‐19. We examine how 2021 state COVID‐19 policy mixes across six domains were associated with registered nurse (RN) employment recovery in 2022: telehealth expansion, early prescription refill flexibility, cost relief (cost‐sharing + vaccine cost relief), paid sick leave, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates. Using 51 jurisdictions (50 states plus the Distr…

  • Geomorphological features of Queen Charlotte Strait, Pacific coast of Canada, and their implications for ice-sheet retreat and relative sea-level changes during the last deglaciation

    Open Access•Zhen Li, Cooper Stacey et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 93

Queen Charlotte Strait (QCSt), along the glacial Pacific margin of Canada, preserves seabed geomorphological records of past tectonic, glacial, and oceanographic processes, particularly since the Last Glacial Maximum. These records can provide an analogue for predicting future seabed and sediment dynamics in contemporary ice-covered region and their surroundings under global warming. The present study identifies and maps the seabed geomorphology …

  • The Dagda, Thor and ATU 1148B

    Open Access•John Shaw•ARTICLE•Temenos - Nordic Journal for the…•2019

Since ancient times celestial thunder gods have been a familiar feature in mythologies throughout the Indo-European language area. Their Irish counterpart, the Dagda, is a major personage at the centre of the Mythological Cycle, and his possible connections to the Scandinavian god Thor are examined here. Following a brief section dealing with questions of methodology, points of comparison are addressed which include the two gods’ common primary r…

    Open Access•John Shaw•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2007

In northwestern Europe, the migration of legends has been a growing area of study, exploring their history, development, and geographical/cultural distribution. The past two centuries have been a time of large-scale voluntary or forced migrations that have provided new opportunities for investigating how folklore, including legends, has survived and changed during mass population movements. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, is foremost among the S…

Two hundred and twenty-six randomly selected individuals from Easton, Pennsylvania completed a mail questionnaire that was designed to assess the general public's attitudes toward many of the personal and societal issues surrounding genetic testing for disease susc…

  • Salt-marsh aggradation in response to late-Holocene sea-level rise at Amherst Point, Nova Scotia, Canada

Open Access•John Shaw, James Andrew Ceman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•References: 2

A radiocarbon 14 C chronology determined for plant macrofossils in exposed salt-marsh sediments at Amherst Point, Nova Scotia, Canada, shows that the edge of the high salt marsh aggraded 7.5 m since 900 BC, equivalent to a mean rate of 25.9 cm 100 yr -1 . Four phases of rapid aggradation (900–600 BC, 100 bc– AD 200, AD 700–1100, and AD 1600 to present) were interspersed with three phases of slower aggradation (600– 100 BC, AD 200–700, and (tentat…

  • Potential Impacts of Global Sea‐level Rise on Canadian Coasts

    Open Access•John Shaw, Robert B Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•1998•Cited by: 9•References: 35

The sea‐level rise that may result from global climate change is placed within the context of past and present sea‐level changes on Canadian coasts. To assess future impact, a dimensionless index of sensitivity is determined. Coasts with low, moderate, and high sensitivity constitute 67%, 30%, and 3% of the total coastline, respectively. The most sensitive regions are: (1) several parts of the Maritime Provinces; (2) two areas of the British Colu…

These were content-analyzed for source characteristics, types of relationship, nature of the influence process, source/content orientation, and the functional autonomy of induced behavior or attitudes. A mixture of the processes of influence described by Kelman (1958) emerges in some cases, either through various combinations …

  • Rectilinear Slope Formation in Antarctica∗

John Shaw, TERRY R HEALY•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1977

Rectilinear slopes in the Olympus Range, Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica were termed Richter slopes and attributed to formation by salt weathering and deflation. Existing theoretical models for Richter slope development are invalid when the processes of salt weathering and deflation act without scree movement. Removal of all slope debris by salt weathering and deflation corresponds to the solution y = 0 in Lehmann's differential equation of sl…

    John Shaw, John W Shaw•ARTICLE•New Community•1990•References: 5

This article reviews efforts by the Prison Service to counteract racial discrimination within the Service, focussing in particular on the programme to train the race relations teams of individual penal establishments. It is argued that trained teams score over untrained teams on a number of fronts, exhibiting greater perserverance in their efforts and a higher rate of action plan implementation. The article concludes with five suggested measures …

Prior to category assignment, half of the subjects had been given c…

  • Determining Paleosol Topography Using Seismic Refraction

    Open Access•Tim Rolph, Tim C Rolph et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

The seismic refraction reversed profiling technique has been used to investigate the topography of the last interglacial soil (paleosol S1) within the central Chinese Loess Plateau near Xifeng. The results suggest an essentially flat-lying soil at a depth which varies by only a few meters over an area of more than 10 km 2 . In addition, the results indicate a high-velocity layer at 50-60 m depth which is thought to coincide with a layer of carbon…

This study investigated differences in social dominance orientation between incumbents of different social roles (police officers vs. public defenders) and ethnic groups known to differ in general social status (i.e., whites vs. blacks and Hispanics). Consistent with theoretical expectations: (a) Police were significantly more social‐dominance oriented than either jurors or public defenders. (b) Public defenders tended to be less social‐dominance…
