  • A skeptic’s guide to “intercultural communication”—debunking the “intercultural” and rethinking “culture”

    Open Access•Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Language and Semiotic Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Starting with a critique of so-called intercultural communication, the present paper contests and challenges the prevalent and dominant essentialist views of “culture”. It is exposed that these views have a detrimental underlying logic that is both destructive and self-destructive. Instead, the paper proposes a radically new idea of culture, a minimalist approach supported by insights gleaned from contemporary semiotic inquiry. In this approach, …

  • Confucius the untouchable

    Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2022

The present paper focuses on the semiotics of historization, that is, of “narration as history” and provides a meta-analysis of the semiotic modeling of Confucius as a case in point. I argue that the personage who has come to be known as Confucius has existed and can only exist, without exception, in multiple forms of sociocultural representation and interpretation that are natural results of distinct modeling processes. These forms compose the i…

  • Representing Existential Danger

Hongbing Yu, Semiotic Society of America•ARTICLE•The American Journal of Semiotics•2022

  • A Lotmanian semiotic interpretation of cultural memory in ritual

    Open Access•Cheng Kang, Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2022•References: 19

This paper affords a Lotmanian cultural semiotic analysis of the inner workings of ritual embodying the mechanism of cultural memory. In this intersectional study, we propose treating ritual as an integral semiotic system in which the community follows a prescribed collective process to create religious or social meanings and to regulate the mechanism of cultural memory through concrete symbols in the forms of behavior, speech, gestures, objects,…

  • Modeling in semiotics

    Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2021

This paper provides an integrative and updated view of modeling in semiotics. It postulates that the essence of modeling is supersession. In any act or instance of modeling, the model supersedes and is brought to the front for salience, accessibility, and operability, whereas at the same time the modeled recedes and exists in the background, inaccessible and inoperable. The paper goes on to differentiate between two major types of modeling, the u…

  • Between interpretation and the subject

    Open Access•Jie Zhang, Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2021•References: 1

This paper affords a critical and historical reappraisal of Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony. It addresses the issue of the subjectivity of interpretation in the reception and formulation of this highly influential theory in literary semiotics. Following a revaluation of three major patterns of interpretation of polyphony that have emerged in the global field of literary theory since 1929, as well as Bakhtin’s shift in emphasis in 1963, we find that…

  • A Cultural Semiotics of Jingshen

Jie Zhang, Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2020

In the face of myriad crises in modern societies, semiotic inquiry has many valuable contributions to make. However, the long-standing dominant analytical paradigms in the field have made it exceedingly difficult, if not altogether impossible, to tackle the countless unanalyzable aspects of semiosis in the human condition. What needs to be done in semiotics is to highlight another mode of knowing, synthetic thinking, without excluding the analyti…

  • Semiotic modeling and education

    Open Access•Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Within the rich legacy left by Thomas Sebeok, there is a critical concept of semiotic modeling that directly addresses the core of the philosophy of education in the light of semiotics and affords valuable implications for the nascent interdisciplinary field of inquiry of edusemiotics or educational semiotics , essentially a philosophy of human knowing. The present paper argues that the concept of modeling as in Modeling Systems Theory has elevat…

  • A semiotic analysis of anti-identity construction in fictional narratives from the viewpoint of modeling systems theory

    Open Access•Hongbing Yu, Jie Zhang•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2016•References: 2

From the standpoint of Modeling Systems Theory formulated by Thomas Sebeok and Marcel Danesi in 2000, the reason why a fictional narrative can be rightly considered outstanding and appreciated by different generations of readers/viewers is not just because it has depicted “typical characters in typical contexts,” but more often because the text itself, understood in the Sebeokian sense as a composite modeling strategy, has achieved relatively hig…

  • A carnival pilgrimage

    Open Access•Hongbing Yu•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

This paper reviews the development of Chinese cultural semiotics from the early age of reception to the present day. The return of Cultural Awareness in the late 1970s in China paved the way for the entry of diverse Western thought and led to the so-called “fever of cultural studies” since the 1980s. The dynamic nature of Chinese culture calls for equally dynamic theories and this has provided a perfect opportunity for combining the various newly…
