  • Interpreting mood scores

Open Access•Colin Cooper, Chris Mcconville et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1990

Mood variability is shown to be a stable characteristic of individuals, such individual differences accounting for some 25 per cent of the total variability of mood scores over time. This large effect is shown to have three major consequences: it is impossible to use tables of norms to assess the severity of a given mood for an individual; the whole logic of using norms for the interpretation of moods is flawed; and correlations between moods and…

  • The scientific status of the Defence Mechanism Test

    Open Access•Colin Cooper•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1988

The Defence Mechanism Test, one of the better validated techniques for studying the operation of Freudian defences, has recently been impugned on theoretical grounds. This paper reconsiders two of the most telling points made by Kline (1987) and concludes that his alternative explanations are not well supported by theory or experiment

  • A brief computerized form of a schematic analogy task

Open Access•Jon May, Paul Kline et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1987

The nature of the components derived from componential analysis has not been fully established. A computerized version of the People Pieces Analogy Task used by Sternberg is described, and despite different materials and pace of testing, results similar so those of Sternberg are reported. These are then used to develop and validate a shorter form of the task, suitable for administration together with a battery of tests to measure other cognitive …

  • An evaluation of the Defence Mechanism Test

Open Access•Colin Cooper, Paul Kline•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1986

A number of applied studies have shown that Kragh's Defence Mechanism Test (DMT) is able to predict success in stressful occupations in accord with Freudian theory. This test has never been related to other common personality measures, and only one study has determined whether subliminal threat is a necessary condition for producing the perceptual distortions thought to correspond to defences. Two experiments are reported. One shows that sublimin…

  • Inspection Time and Primary Abilities

Open Access•Colin Cooper, Paul Kline et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1986

S ummary . A measure of inspection time and measures of primary abilities drawn from the Comprehensive Ability Battery (Hakstian and Cattell, 1976) were administered to 20 subjects, mostly undergraduates. Inspection time was shown to be related more to factors of perceptual speed and visualisation than to the primaries most associated with fluid or crystallised ability

  • Correlations Among Elementary Cognitive Tasks

Open Access•Paul Kline, Jon May et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1986

S ummary . Eight elementary cognitive tasks were selected because of their potential application to the study of flexible thinking. The intercorrelations between these tasks were computed to investigate whether individual differences in performance could be found. These correlations are discussed in terms of the cognitive processes underlying the tasks, and it is concluded that seven of the eight tasks hold promise for future evaluation

  • The Factor Structure of the Comprehensive Ability Battery

Open Access•Paul Kline, Colin Cooper•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1984

S ummary . The Comprehensive Ability Battery (CAB) was administered to a sample of British students and the test scores were subjected to an oblique factor analysis. Six factors were extracted which fitted closely those described by Cattell and colleagues. This supports their claims concerning the structure of abilities and the utility of the CAB in Great Britain

  • A factorial analysis of the authoritarian personality

Open Access•Paul Kline, Colin Cooper•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1984•Cited by: 2

A battery of personality tests measuring authoritarian personality traits together with the EPQ and the Cattell 16PF test were administered to a sample of students in order to identify and locate a factor or factors of authoritarianism. One factor emerged independently of neuroticism and extraversion on which the authoritarian scales loaded - a factor identified as the obsessional personality. Of all the authoritarian tests in this study the Kohn…

  • A Reply to ‘The Psychometry of Objective Motivation Measurement

Open Access•Paul Kline, Colin Cooper•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1982

  • The Internal Structure of the Motivation Analysis Test

Open Access•Colin Cooper, Paul Kline•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1982

S ummary . Cattell's Motivation Analysis Test (MAT) is the only published instrument for assessing his comprehensive motivational theory. The homogeneity of the MAT was investigated by classical item analysis, and the 20 scales were found to have uniformly low item‐total correlations. This may explain why a number of attempts to factor analyse the test have given inconsistent results, and suggests that the MAT would require extensive revision bef…
