  • Vampires, Burial, and Death

    Paul Barber•BOOK•Vampires, Burial, and Death•2017

In this engrossing book, Paul Barber surveys centuries of folklore about vampires and offers the first scientific explanation for the origins of the vampire legends. From the tale of a sixteenth-century shoemaker from Breslau whose ghost terrorized everyone in the city, to the testimony of a doctor who presided over the exhumation and dissection of a graveyard full of Serbian vampires, his book is fascinating reading. This study’s comprehensivene…

  • What is a Peculiar

    Open Access•Paul Barber•ARTICLE•Ecclesiastical Law Journal•1995

A peculiar or exempt jurisdiction is, broadly speaking, one which does not fit into the general scheme of jurisdiction within the Church. It is “exempt” from the “normal” structures, its jurisdiction is “peculiar” to itself. It is important at this stage to note that peculiars are jurisdictions , not places, still less buildings. A jurisdiction can be personal, territorial, or a mixture of the two. However, since the reformation, most jurisdictio…

  • Ease of identifying words degraded by visual noise

Open Access•Paul Barber, Christine de la Mahotière•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1982

A technique is described for investigating word recognition involving the superimposition of ‘noise’ on the visual target word. For this task a word is printed in the form of letters made up of separate elements; noise consists of additional elements which serve to reduce the ease whereby the words may be recognized, and a threshold‐like measure can be obtained in terms of the amount of noise. A word frequency effect was obtained for the noise ta…

  • Social desirability in the Eysenck Personality Inventory

Open Access•S Dunnett, Stephen B Dunnett et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1981

To investigate the extent to which the social desirability of test items can bias Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) score profiles, a group of subjects was asked to rate the items of the EPI in terms of their social desirability. Three further groups were asked to complete the inventory honestly, or in such a way as to give a good or bad impression of themselves. Test items measuring extraversion were rated as socially undesirable, whereas thos…

E Bruce Goldstein, Paul Barber et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1978

  • Experimenter bias against subliminal perception? A rejoinder

    Open Access•Paul Barber, Paul J Barber•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1977

The basis for Spence & Smith's (1977) critique of three replications of subliminal perception experiments is judged to be conjectural. The case that the replications were less sensitive to subliminal perception effects than the original experiments is evaluated and rebutted

  • Experimenter Bias and Subliminal Perception

Open Access•Paul Barber, Paul J Barber et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1975

It has been suggested that subliminal perception phenomena may be in part due to experimenter bias effects. Two studies that obtained positive evidence of subliminal perception were therefore replicated with experimenters tested under blind and not blind conditions. There was only marginal support for the subliminal perception hypothesis and, although there were fairly clear indications of diffuse experimenter effects, the evidence for the experi…
