    Open Access•Richard Carter•ARTICLE•Open Library of Humanities•2023

This paper conducts a speculative examination of how AI image synthesisers, which generate novel imagery in response to inputted textual prompts — such as DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion — can be employed reflexively to investigate cultural representations of machine vision technologies. Such work can be framed methodologically as a form of ‘critical image synthesis’: the prompting of imagery that variously interrogates and makes visible…

  • The value of monitoring data in a process evaluation of hygiene behaviour change in Community Health Clubs to explain findings from a cluster-randomised controlled trial in Rwanda

Open Access•Juliet Waterkeyn, Anthony Waterkeyn et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The cRCT conclusion that the case study of Rusizi District does not encourage the use of the CHC model for scaling up, raises concerns over the possible misrepresentation of the potential of the holistic CHC model to achieve health impact in a more realistic time frame. It also questions the appropriateness of apparently rigorous quantitative research, such as the cluster-Randomised Controlled Trial as conducted in Rusizi District, to adequately …

Matthew Parker, earl of Leicester Sir Robert Dudley et al.•BOOK•The diocesan population returns…•2005

"This comprehensive edition makes available two of the most important sources for population studies in the early modern period. The bishops' returns of 1563 and 1603 represent the earliest census-type information that has survived in England and Wales. The 1563 returns, surviving from twelve dioceses, record the number of households; the 1603 documents, from nine dioceses, were intended to survey religious nonconformity and estimate the number o…

    Richard Carter•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2004

When creative uses of spoken language have been investigated, the main examples have been restricted to particular contexts such as narrative and related story-telling genres. This paper reports on an initial investigation using the 5 million word CANCODE corpus of everyday spoken English and discusses a range of social contexts in which creative uses of language are manifested. A main conclusion reached is that creative language use often signpo…

  • Estimating Areas of Land under Small-Scale Irrigation Using Satellite Imagery and Ground Data for a Study Area in N.E. Nigeria

    N D Pratt, A C Bird et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1997•Cited by: 1

SPOT XS imagery and ground data in the form of an area frame sample were collected simultaneously. The aim of the survey was to test a methodology for the provision of area estimates of land under small-scale irrigation in a complex floodplain terrain in north-east Nigeria. The feasibility of carrying out the ground survey was demonstrated. The classification of the satellite imagery produced low mapping accuracies and the area estimated from pix…

  • Vers une plus grande décentralisation du financement gouverne‐mental au Québec

    Open Access•Richard Carter, Charles Beaudelaire•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Administration•1985

This paper focuses on the degree of financial independence of local governments in the province of Quebec. The author shows that even if the Municipal Finance Reform (Bill 57) succeeded in achieving its goals, the level of financial dependence of local governments in Quebec remains among the highest in North America. Scenarios for further decentralization of financing and spending powers in Quebec are then briefly investigated. Sommaire. Cet essa…

  • A taxonomy of objectives for professional education

    Richard Carter, Richard G Carter•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 6

A discussion of available ways of analysing and specifying educational objectives shows that none is adequate for considering professional education. A new taxonomy of educational objectives designed to meet this need is described. The classification is based on a description of personal attributes under the main headings: knowledge, skill and personal qualities. The application of the taxonomy to the analysis and design of curricula is discussed…
