Vulnerability of coastal livelihoods to shrimp farming: Insights from Mozambique
Strengthening Threatened Communities through Adaptation: Insights from Coastal Mozambique

Cumulative environmental effects of low salinity shrimp farming in Thailand
The cumulative environmental effects of low salinity shrimp farming in the Bangpakong River Basin, eastern Thailand, were investigated using a GIS-assisted approach. Water supply, water quality, and agricultural land use were used to represent key environmental resources. Shrimp farming is a major consumer of freshwater, but cumulative effects on water supplies are probably negligible because of ample rainfall and similar water consumption of ric…
Response to Jasper Goss, Mike Skladany, and Gerad Middendorf: “Shrimp Aquaculture in Thailand: A Response to Vandergeest, Flaherty, and Miller”
Low Salinity Inland Shrimp Farming in Thailand
Thailand has been the world's largest exporter of cultured shrimp since 1991. Despite problems with poor environmental conditions and disease outbreaks that led to the failure and abandonment of numerous farms along the coast, Thai shrimp production has remained high. A primary factor has been the establishment of low salinity shrimp farming for black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) in areas much further inland from the coast than once thought fea…

Rice Paddy or Shrimp Pond: Tough Decisions in Rural Thailand
A Political Ecology of Shrimp Aquaculture in Thailand1
This paper uses themes from political ecology to develop insights into the billion dollar shrimp aquaculture sector in Thailand. We find that corporations can exercise only limited control over shrimp production and that there is no clear trend toward larger operations. We explain the continued viability of small owner-operated farms by looking at how shrimp farming is located in physical and social space, and at the ability of owner-operators to…
A Spatiotemporal Framework for Environmental Information Systems
The data products and delivery mechanisms provided by research institutes and government agencies are lagging behind the needs and expectations of the private sector, regulatory agencies, and academia. This situation is particularly acute in the environmental arena, in which the analysis of complex processes frequently requires the integration of data and information collected by independent researchers and agencies. However, a variety of technic…

Women in Local Governments in Northern Thailand
Women occupy minute numbers of political offices throughout the world. In the developing world particularly, women face a variety of barriers that limit their involvement in government. This paper reviews the structure of local government administration in Thailand, documents the involvement of women, and presents the results of a study of women leaders in northern Thailand, which provides some insights into the conditions operating to constrain …
Identifying Important Agricultural Lands: A Critique
Preferences for Rural Land Severance Policies: An Empirical Analysis
The increasing demand for residential land in rural Ontario has generated a widespread interest in land severance activity and policy. This paper examines resident preferences for alternative land severance policies using a paired comparison experiment. The analysis identifies those severance policies most preferred by township residents and characterizes groups of residents with similar preferences. Differences in policy preferences are more clo…
