Mapping crop producer perceptions
Agricultural trade and climate change have altered land cover and land use worldwide. For example, the recent growth of international soybean demand has been associated with 1.3 Mha primary Amazon forest loss and up to 13-fold increase in double-cropping areas in Brazil. Many studies have tried to understand which and how global and local drivers affect deforestation and agricultural intensification processes at the landscape level, yet few have …

Community health workers in Canada and the US
In this commentary, we address community health workers’ (CHWs) marginalized social location within the health care systems of Canada and the US. This marginalization is due, in part, to their being a workforce shaped by socio-structural factors, such as gender discrimination, racism, and poor socio-economic conditions. This marginalization challenges their ability to address health equity. We propose system-level and workforce-level policy chang…

Professional development programs in health promotion
Developing innovative interventions that are in sync with a health promotion paradigm often represents a challenge for professionals working in local public health organizations. Thus, it is critical to have both professional development programs that favor new practices and tools to examine these practices. In this case study, we analyze the health promotion approach used in a pilot intervention addressing children's vulnerability that was devel…

Challenges of Participatory Evaluation within a Community-Based Health Promotion Partnership
Evaluating multiple-member partnerships is always a challenging task. This article is based on our experiences using a participatory approach to evaluating a community-based health promotion research project. “Mujer Sana, Comunidad Sana—Healthy Women, Healthy Communities” was partnership-based, multi-sector, multicultural, and participatory. We describe our experiences working with participatory methods to evaluate the partnership per se. Three e…
Postpartum Mothers' Disclosure of Abuse, Role, and Conflict
Experts evaluating evidence of the occurrence and effects of abuse before, during, and after pregnancy have called for research on the context within which violence occurs. This study elicited postpartum mothers' perceptions of roles and conflict in their abusive intimate relationships. Thirty newly delivered African-, Anglo-, and Hispanic-American abused mothers consented to be interviewed. While ethnicity, cultural norms, and economic issues fr…
Perceptions of Domestic Abuse Among Mexican American and Anglo American Women
This paper examines the role of culture in shaping perceptions, definitions, and interpretations Mexican American and Anglo American women hold of domestic abuse. Two theoretical views concerning perceptions that Mexican Americans may hold of domestic abuse are discussed. The first view suggests that Mexican American women follow a pluralist model and therefore differ significantly in their perceptions of domestic abuse from Anglo American women.…
