Accessible Care: The Human Rights Case for Take-Home Injectable Opioid Agonist Treatment
Substance use disorders comprise a significant portion of disability experiences in Canada and are often experienced alongside other disabilities. During the pandemic, there were declines in healthcare and substance use treatment utilization. In response, new risk mitigation guidelines aimed to increase substance use treatment accessibility, advancing the right to available, accessible, acceptable, and quality healthcare. Injectable opioid agonis…
How injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT) care could be improved? service providers and stakeholders’ perspectives
Background Addressing inadequacies in the implementation of existing evidence-based approaches into practice, such as injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT), is imperative for the management of opioid use disorder. With the expansion of iOAT, stakeholder perspectives are needed to inform program optimization. This study aimed to understand stakeholder and provider perspectives on iOAT care and how it can be improved to better meet service use…
Building Capacity for Injectable Diacetylmorphine and Hydromorphone for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder: Identifying Typical Doses
Identifying typical doses of existing opioid use disorder medications, such as injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT), can support client and program needs, and potentially increase iOAT expansion. Longitudinal data from participants in a cohort study ( n = 131), along with clinic dispensation records from August 2014 to April 2020, were used to examine physician prescribed as well as used doses of injectable diacetylmorphine and hydromorphon…

Factors contributing to frequent police contact among young people: A multivariate analysis including homelessness, community visibility, and drug use in British Columbia, Canada
There is increasing recognition and attention towards the patterns of police encounters with citizens. In this study, we examine the determinants of being stopped and questioned by the police among a heterogenous sample of adolescents and young adults, who were either people who use drugs and a comparison group, in three non-metropolitan areas of British Columbia, Canada. We conducted bivariate and multivariate analyses to identify the unique var…
Young People Who Use Drugs Views Toward the Power and Authority of Police Officers
Many young people who use drugs are structurally vulnerable to policing powers given the ongoing criminalization of drug possession. Police authority limits and the expression of that authority may play a significant role in police encounters among young people who use drugs. This qualitative study explores the views of young people who use drugs toward police power and authority in their recent encounters with police officers. Interviews were co…

Accidental Intimacies”: Reconsidering Bodily Encounters Between Police and Young People Who Use Drugs
Youth who use drugs (YWUD) are likely to encounter the police and experience victimization within those encounters. Negative experiences of police among youth can dramatically undermine youths’ trust in police, making them unlikely to ask for help when they need it. In this article, we use Rance and Fraser’s concept of “accidental intimacies” between staff and people who inject drugs arising in encounters within supervised consumption sites. Thei…
The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama
The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama (Avant-Doc 2) is an international collection of in-depth, substantive interviews with moving-image artists working “avant-doc,” that is, making films that explore the territory between documentary and experimental cinema. The Sublimity of Document follows on MacDonald’s earlier Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema (Oxford, 2015), though the focus here is on filmmakers who are …

Respondent-Driven Sampling With Youth Who Use Drugs: A Mixed Methods Assessment
Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) has been widely used for recruiting hard-to-sample populations, particularly men who have sex with men and people who inject drugs from large urban centers. The aim of this article was to examine the feasibility of using RDS among nonmetropolitan youth who use drugs. Between May 2017 and June 2018, RDS was used to recruit youth who use drugs, ages 16–30, in three nonmetropolitan Canadian cities. All participants c…

An Exploratory Study of the Nature of Family Resilience in Families Affected by Parental Alcohol Abuse
Resilient families are able to adapt to adversities, but the nature of family resilience is not well understood. This study examines patterns of family functioning that may protect families from the negative impact of alcohol abuse. Naturally occurring patterns of family functioning are identified and associations between these patterns and parenting, current parental alcohol use, recent family stressful events, supportive relationships outside t…
Minimum Alcohol Prices and Outlet Densities in British Columbia, Canada: Estimated Impacts on Alcohol-Attributable Hospital Admissions
Objectives. We investigated whether periodic increases in minimum alcohol prices were associated with reduced alcohol-attributable hospital admissions in British Columbia. Methods. The longitudinal panel study (2002–2009) incorporated minimum alcohol prices, density of alcohol outlets, and age- and gender-standardized rates of acute, chronic, and 100% alcohol-attributable admissions. We applied mixed-method regression models to data from 89 geogr…
Up Close and Political: Three Short Ruminations on Ideology in the Nature Film
Why is nature filmmaking generally absent from histories and theorizations of cinema, and why do films like March of the Penguins receive such grudging attention from serious critics? By exploring ideological dimensions of two formative influences (Jean Painlevé and the Disney True-Life Adventures), along with a recent National Geographic special on the Sonoran desert and the film Microcosmos, MacDonald demonstrates why nature film should be take…

Ultimate Ends in Practical Reasoning: Aquinas's Aristotelian Moral Psychology and Anscombe's Fallacy
Aristotelian moral philosophy, as presented and developed by Aristotle himself and his medieval followers, is founded on what many commentators have taken to be a dubious argument. Aristotle begins the Nicomachean Ethics with the famous claim that every human activity, action, and choice aims at some good (1094al-2), and then seems to conclude within the next 26 lines that there is some single good for human life and that inquiry into its nature …

We determined estimates of effect using linear regression models incorporating an autoregressive integrated moving average e…
The British Columbia Alcohol and other Drug Monitoring System: Overview and Early Progress
This pilot project is a province-wide and nationally=supported collaboration intended to add value to existing monitoring and surveillance exercises that currently exist and are being developed in Canada. The fundamental aim is to create a system that generates a timely flow of data on hazardous patterns of substance use and related harms so as to inform public debate, to support effective policy, and to facilitate policy-relevant epidemiological…
Unlocking Patterns of Alcohol Consumption in British Columbia Using Alcohol Sales Data: A Foundation for Public Health Monitoring
Alcohol sales data provide a more accurate indication of alcohol consumption than alternative methods such as population surveys. This information can be used to better understand epidemiological issues related to alcohol consumption, policy development and evaluation. Official sales records were collected for the 28 regional districts of British Columbia (BC) for 2002–2005, while homemade alcohol was estimated from survey data. Alcohol consumpti…

Poetry and Avant-Garde Film: Three Recent Contributions
This article begins with an overview of the relationship of poetry and independent film. It proceeds to focus on three independent films that use the cinematic apparatus as a means of publishing poetry. Waterworx, a film by Canadian Rick Hancox, recycles Wallace Stevens's "A Clear Day and No Memories" in a manner that confirms the accomplishment of the original poem while embedding it, subtly as well as evocatively, within the filmmaker's persona…

The Temporal Impact of the Age Distribution on per Adult Consumption in Ontario, Canada
Temporal changes in per adult consumption of alcohol may be partially explained by changing age distributions. Data sources included official alcohol sales data, population data by age groups, and population surveys from five years in Ontario. Results showed that the population has been getting older since 1978 and that people drink less as they age. Age-standardized calculations showed that between 2.5% and 6% of the decline in per adult consump…

Distinguishing causes and correlates of drinking and driving
The overall framework for this review For many social problems it is extremely difficult to determine cause-effect relationships with any degree of certainty. Drinking and driving is one such social problem where causes are difficult to delineate. A major distinction exists between causes and correlates of driving while impaired (DWI). For a correlation,* only one condition needs to be satisfied-i.e., there is a relationship between the variable …

Frampton: There were earlier things, only one of which will ever conceivably turn up again. The others are lost. I started making films in 1962, but I wasn't prolific. It was expensive to do.
