  • Picturing the New Berlin: Filmic Representations of the Postunification Capital

    Rob Burns•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2015

Just as Berlin as a political, social, ethnic, and material entity has undergone considerable change since 1989, so too the cinematic representations of the new capital over the last twenty years or so have projected a diverse set of images of the city. This article considers a selection of fiction films that can be grouped together under three broad thematic category headings: those dealing with Berlin's past, those addressing the city's multicu…

  • Towards a Cinema of Cultural Hybridity: Turkish-German Filmmakers and the Representation of Alterity

    Rob Burns•ARTICLE•Debatte Journal of Contemporary…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This article considers the development of “Turkish-German cinema” and situates it in relation to the attempts by filmmakers associated with the New German Cinema to represent the experience of migrants in the Federal Republic. These films were frequently criticised for reducing their protagonists to stereotypes, portraying the migrant as victim and focusing excessively on conflict of an intercultural or intracultural kind. The 1990s saw the emerg…

  • The Politics of Cultural Representation: Turkish–German Encounters

    Rob Burns•ARTICLE•German Politics•2007•Cited by: 4

This article considers the development of Turkish-German cinema, situating it in relation to both the early manifestations of a diasporic literature in Germany and the attempts by filmmakers associated with the New German Cinema to represent the experience of migrants in the Federal Republic. These films were frequently criticised for reducing their protagonists to stereotypes, portraying the migrant as victim and focusing excessively on conflict…

  • Intellectuals as Cultural Agenda‐setters in the Federal Republic

Rob Burns, Wilfried Van Der Will•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This article argues that intellectuals in Germany post‐1945 have had, and continue to have, an important influence both on the political culture in general and on cultural policy in particular. Our thesis has been structured in three parts. The first traces the introduction of the term “intellectuals” into German, sketches out how they have variously been defined and sets out the reasons why they have been polemically abused as well as critically…

  • German cultural policy: An overview

Rob Burns, Wilfried Van Der Will•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2003•Cited by: 9

The most important aspect of cultural policy in Germany is its federally devolved nature. Hence the article begins with an examination of the different levels of cultural policy, from the all-important municipal authorities to the relatively autonomous regional government and, finally, the national government, which discharges certain responsibilities in cultural matters through a number of departments, including the recently created ministry of …

  • Protest and Democracy in West Germany: Extra-Parliamentary Opposition and the Democratic Agenda

Rudy Koshar, Rudy J Koshar et al.•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•1989

The Federal Republic of Germany has long been held up as a 'model society' on account of its economic and social policy achievements. Largely ignored, however, has been the crucial part played by extra-parliamentary protest in the maturing of democracy in that society. In this, the first comprehensive study of the subject in English, the authors trace the rich history of political protest in West Germany and examine the political role of critical…

  • West German Intellectuals and Ideology

    Rob Burns•ARTICLE•New German Critique•1976

This article deals effectively with one of the key concerns of New German Critique in that it sets up an elaborate model for understanding a particular type of intellectual. Though it does not cover the more recent developments pertaining to the West German intellectual, it does lay the basis for such a discussion. This becomes evident when one reads the articles by Wolf-Dieter Narr and firgen Seifert in this issue. In our opinion, the model that…

The problem of constitutional reform was an important Canadian political issue from 1967 to 1971. The lengthy discussions failed to produce any cohesive results due to the inability of the various governments to reconcile their particular interests. One of the areas of concern was the makeup and the powers of the Senate. As a federally appointed body it has not fulfilled in any satisfactory way its role as a representative of the regional interes…
