The changing meaning of race in the social sciences
This paper reviews the current debate over the relative merits of the term “race” as a scientific concept and highlights the need to reexamine the application of the term as it is utilized in research and professional discourse in a number of fields. Although long embraced as a valid term for sorting and characterizing human populations on the basis of physical traits, the term has been abandoned by a growing number of social scientists who see i…

Black Ethnicity and the Persistence of Ethnogenesis
Some scholars assume a radical discontinuity between the experiences of blacks in the United States and the experiences of immigrants ethnic groups in American cities. There is a tendency to see the situation of blacks in racial rather than in ethnic terms and to emphasize the conditions of racial oppresion and exploitation as exclusive sources of black sociocultural characteristics. This emphasis obscures the important role of migration, urbaniz…

Black Youth and Psychosocial Development
While there exists a massive literature on the characteristics and problems of black Americans, few studies exist which take as the main focus of attention the black adolescent or youth and the problem of psychosocial development. Moreover, while there has been considerable genuine interest and concern for the psychosocial developmental problems of black youth, there has been little actual systematic or theoretically guided research in this area …
Psychosocial development among Black children and youth
The fundamental assumptions and empirical evidence, upon which are based conventional views of the nature and meaning of black self-esteem, are examined. Review of the literature reveals that a number of these assumptions and conclusions have been drawn from rather weak empirical data.
