Housing conditions and risk of incident COPD
Individuals living in semi-detached houses or rented homes had a higher risk of developing COPD compared to individuals living in detached or owned homes. Individuals living in cities with < 50.000 residents had a lower risk of COPD compared to individuals living in cities with ≥ 50.000 residents
The Association between Perceived Annoyances in the Indoor Home Environment and Respiratory Infections
The increasing prevalence of reported annoyances in the indoor environment threatens public health. This study aimed to investigate the association between perceived annoyances from the home environment and respiratory infections among individuals with and without asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A total of 16,688 individuals from the Danish Health and Morbidity Survey initiated in 2000 were grouped according to their patte…
Trends in smoking-related diseases by socioeconomic position following a national smoking ban in 2007
The national smoking ban was not associated with a lower incidence of smoking-related diseases in the post-ban period compared to pre-ban levels and no differences between socioeconomic groups were observed. Future tobacco control in Denmark should consider which measures most effectively target the low socioeconomic groups to decrease the current strong socioeconomic inequality in health
Telemediated Training in the Home as a Part of the Everyday Life and Practice With Very Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Patients with very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) conduct their everyday lives under shortness of breath. The aim of this study was to explore telemediated exercise training to patients at home, with the conduct of everyday life as a theoretical framework. Based on ethnographic fieldwork involving a hospital, two municipalities, and homes of 11 patients from 2013 to 2017, this article shows how telemediated training became pa…
Familial predisposition and susceptibility to the effect of other risk factors for myocardial infarction
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess if familial predisposition to myocardial infarction (MI) is an indicator of increased susceptibility to the effect of other established risk factors. The study assessed whether a family history of MI modifies the effect of arterial blood pressure, plasma cholesterol, high and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, % triglycerides, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, height, smoking habits, alcohol intake, physical activi…
Life expectancy in Danish women and men related to smoking habits
Studies reporting increased mortality in smokers are abundant but only a few have directly estimated survival prospects of smokers in terms of lost years of life or probability of living until retirement. None of these have included large numbers of heavily smoking women. A study of mortality in Danish women is particularly informative because the female smoking epidemic started early in Denmark and both prevalence of smoking and mortality from s…
Cardiovascular risk factor profile in subjects with familial predisposition to myocardial infarction in Denmark
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To identify possible modifiable mediators of familial predisposition to myocardial infarction (MI) by assessing the risk factor profile in individuals without MI in relation to parental occurrence of MI. DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross sectional survey of the general population. The odds of an adverse cardiovascular risk factor profile in subjects reporting parental occurrence of MI versus subjects not reporting parental occurrence we…
Baseline characteristics are not sufficient indicators of non-response bias follow up studies
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to examine whether baseline characteristics from a cross sectional survey provided sufficient information regarding non-response bias in a follow up study when compared with information on hospital admissions in the intervening years. DESIGN--This was an 11 year follow up study of a cohort selected in 1974 with register information on hospital admissions during follow up. SETTING--The study was based on a sample of ce…
