Insurance Churn and the Covid-19 Pandemic
In this study, the FFCRA was associated with a significantly decreased risk of losing health insurance. Without the FFCRA, an estimated 2.94 million individuals with Medicaid would have lost insurance coverage each year during the COVID-19 public health emergency
Reducing intergroup anxiety
This study assessed the impacts of an (elaborated) imagined contact intervention (eICI) with graduate-level counseling students (N = 38) in a multicultural counseling course. Participant levels of intergroup anxiety were assessed, comparing those who completed an eICI versus those who did not. Intergroup anxiety decreased for both groups over time, albeit with a greater immediate reduction for those who received the ICI. Qualitative commentary su…
Impact of community masking on Covid-19
Persuading people to mask Even in places where it is obligatory, people tend to optimistically overstate their compliance for mask wearing. How then can we persuade more of the population at large to act for the greater good? Abaluck et al . undertook a large, cluster-randomized trial in Bangladesh involving hundreds of thousands of people (although mostly men) over a 2-month period. Colored masks of various construction were handed out free of c…
Reason to know” in the international law of command responsibility
A recent report by the Australian Defence Force arrived at a conclusion that further investigation was not warranted of commanders regarding their responsibility for failing to investigate suspicious behaviour of subordinates in Afghanistan, who were accused of violations of international humanitarian law. This troubling conclusion calls for a better analysis and understanding of command responsibility in international law and gaps in the law of …

The Mental Health Effects of Student Activism
As student activism continues to roil campuses, concerns have arisen about the mental health costs associated with activist-oriented civic engagement. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 42 self-identifying student activists from across the United States, this study examines how activists describe the impact of their activism on their mental health. While just under one third of the respondents perceived a positive effect, 60% of the respondents …
Nigeria’s public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic
The novel coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19, which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome \nvirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) [1] was first reported in December 2019 by Chinese Health Authorities following an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown origin in Wuhan, Hubei Province [2,3]. The Enduring Legacy of the St Petersburg Declaration
Eyes in the room trump eyes on the screen
Scaffolding may be important for children to overcome puzzling aspects of video chat. We examined whether live co-viewer behavior (responsive or unresponsive), video chat partner’s eye gaze (aligned or misaligned), and object similarity (similar or dissimilar) impacted 24- to 30-month-old children’s responsiveness to (and short-term learning from) video chat. Co-viewer behavior was the primary factor influencing children’s responsiveness and lear…

Tracing the Historical and Legal Development of the Levée en Masse in the Law of Armed Conflict
Levée en masse – the spontaneous uprising of the civilian population against an invading force – has long been a part of the modern law of armed conflict with regard to determining who may legitimately participate in armed conflict. The concept originated during the revolutionary wars in America and France, and was incorporated into the first codified rules of armed conflict. However, despite the prevalence of the category of levée en masse in th…

Women do not count, neither shall they be counted
The 1911 census, released in 2009, is of particular interest to historians. Additional columns recorded for the first time the number of years a woman had been married, her children still living and those who had died. Moreover, the census was taken at a time of heightened political momentum. The Liberal government pushed for ambitious welfare reforms; at the same time, the Votes for Women campaign was growing vigorously. Suffrage organizations d…
Childhood emotional maltreatment and later psychological distress among college students
Unequal before the Law
This article examines the possibility of creating a law of armed conflict that could be uniformly applied to both international and non-international armed conflict. The article looks at the history of modern armed conflict, and charts the progression of warfare from a predominantly interstate event to that which is more likely to be characterized as non-international or internal. The increasing prevalence of non-international armed conflicts thr…
