The Grounds of the Novel

Shelter from the Storm
In her new book on the function of cynicism, Helen Small defines a positive role that cynicism can play in the liberal articulation of the very ideals and norms that cynicism affronts. She provides this “strategic cynicism” with a nineteenth-century lineage including Friedrich Nietzsche, Matthew Arnold, George Eliot, and Thomas Carlyle. This review essay identifies some problems in the concept of strategic cynicism, drawing on Hegel's understandi…

A growing body of literature explores rangers perceptions and experiences of implementing conservation activities. The Relationship between Systemic Racism, Residential Segregation, and Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Covid-19 Deaths in the United States
To understand and address disparities in infectious disease, researchers and public health practitioners should acknowledge how different forms of systemic racism shape health outcomes in the United States. More attention should be given to the mechanisms by which infectious disease pandemics exacerbate health disparities in areas of high residential segregation and should inform more targeted health policies. Such policy changes stand to make al…
Incalculably Diffusive
There are at least three ways to approach Alicia Mireles Christoff's rich and rewarding study of the Victorian novel and object relations psychoanalysis. First of all, it is a major contribution to the criticism on George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. The book's sustained and attentive readings of The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, The Return of the Native, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles should be debated and discussed alongside classic scholarship lik…

The Method Effect
This essay reconsiders the connection between the narrative closure of the Sherlock Holmes stories and their ideological and scientific contexts. Previous studies have taken contemporary scientific discourse to provide Holmes with his famed method of solving crimes. I argue that said method is merely a narrative effect, nowhere carried out in the narrative structure: scientific (or other) contemporary discourse is not the “real” of literary form.…

Method: The Cochrane Collaboration’s criteria for data synthesis and study quality assessment were used. Electronic bibliographic databases and web searches were used to identify randomized and quasi-randomized trials comparing psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy with treatment as usual or no trea…
Recognition or Reification
This essay examines the representational obstacles posed for narrative recognition in the realist novel by crises in capitalism, focusing on Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit (1857). Recognition scenes (Aristotle's anagnorisis ) in Victorian novels tend to model a form of subjectivity and temporality, of concealment and recovery, while capitalist crisis is radically unknowable through this same narrative epistemology. This incompatibility of recogn…

Education as Subjection and Refusal
Over the past decade the insights of debates on modernity and postmodernity, in the context of sweeping poststructuralist proclamations of the end of meta‐narratives and the death of the subject amidst the diffusion of a globalizing Western culture and intimations of large‐scale social change, have begun to infiltrate the field of education. Within the broader framework of poststructuralist criticisms of the assumptions which gird a still‐potent …
