Regulating Sustainable Production
Zoning that supports urban manufacturing may offer new opportunities to promote sustainability benefits ranging from improved job accessibility to reduced waste and resource use. However, industrial uses in urban areas face displacement from competing and conflicting uses. While the process of industrial gentrification is well documented, little work has examined how planning strategies and regulations affect urban manufacturing and its potential…
Developing evaluation of signage for people with dementia
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to to describe development of a framework for use in the evaluation of the effectiveness of signage to assist people with dementia. Design/methodology/approach The study consisted of two parts. Workshops held in both Sydney and Edinburgh using “world café” methodology with 28 knowledgeable participants produced a pool of statements. These were subsequently used in a three-round Delphi process administered to 3…
Discombobulations and Transitions
We live in a digitalized world, where social media have become an integral part of scholarly life. Digital tools like blogs can facilitate various research-related activities, from recruitment, to data collection, to communication of research findings. In this article, we analyze our experience of blogging to suggest that they provide a useful resource for qualitative researchers working with reflexive accounts of personal experience. Through our…
The Case as Space
This article considers the potential of Doreen Massey's work on the relational conceptualization of space as a multiplicity of trajectories to inform case study research in educational settings. I argue that the conceptualization can be useful at two levels: methodology and methods. At a methodological level, the case itself can be conceptualized as space. The heterogeneity and dynamism of space thought of in this way has implications for familia…
Place‐related identity, texts, and transcultural meanings
The spatial turn has been marked by increasing interest in conceptions of space and place in diverse areas of research. However, the important links between place and identity have received less attention, particularly in educational research. This paper reports an 18‐month research project that aimed to develop a theory of place‐related identity through the textual transactions of reading and writing. The research was an in‐depth qualitative stu…
Investigating change in young people's understandings of Japan
This article demonstrates how a set of complementary qualitative methods can be used to construct a detailed picture not only of the nature of young people's representations of a distant place but the processes of learning by which such representations develop over the medium term. The analysis is based on an interpretive case study of a class of 13‐ to 14‐year‐olds in England learning about Japan as part of their geography curriculum. The findin…
Place-Related Identities Through Texts
The implications of the transdisciplinary spatial turn are attracting growing interest in a broad range of areas related to education. This paper draws on a methodology for interdisciplinary thinking in order to articulate a new theoretical configuration of place-related identity, and its implications for a research agenda. The new configuration is created through an analysis of place-related identities in narrative theory, texts and literacy pro…
Picturing the city
Urban environments form the setting of everyday life for most Western young people. This article explores \nvisual representations of cities made by young people in a range of environments within four countries. The \nfindings inform a larger study on urban geographies within geography education. We analyse students’ \ndrawings of cities regarding physical characteristics, activities and issues. There are many commonalities \nbetween drawings fro…
Children constructing Japan
Children's understandings of place have been researched from the differing perspectives of ‘new social studies of childhood’, developmental psychology and geography education. However, the processes by which children construct their understandings of distant places have received relatively little attention. This paper summarises insights from the existing literature and outlines the findings from empirical research which employed a range of inter…
Critical Geographies in/of Education
The great obsession of the nineteenth century was, as we know, history: with its themes of development and of suspension, of crisis, and cycle, themes of the ever-accumulating past, with its prepon
Mapping Everyday
This article argues that by using theories of the spatial to understand how situated materiality (i.e., place) and contestations of identity matter when conceiving global and curricular space, educators may interrupt and rearticulate practices and systems of oppression. By focusing on globalization writ large, there is danger of leaving important concerns of the local unattended, and thereby failing to see how processes of globalization exacerbat…
