Research, political engagement and dispossession
‘Dip Kapoor and Steven Jordan have gathered a powerful set of writers who live and work, write and imagine, at the intersection of critical inquiry and radical action in the Americas and Asia. The complex and compelling chapters remind us of the academic obligation to engage the class struggle; calling for research that can historicize injustice and resistance movements; make visible capillaries of global capital and land grabs; connect campaigns…
The qualitative imagination
In this paper, we argue that the non-positivist origins that provided the impetus for the qualitative imagination over the past half century in educational research has undergone subtle, but nevertheless profound change and transformation as neoliberal forms of governmentality have increasingly colonised social and educational research. We examine contemporary responses and challenges to this process from within and outside the academy. It is our…
Education, Participatory Action Research, and Social Change
Drawing primarily from critical traditions in social and educational research, this book frames contemporary issues and several conceptual, theoretical-analytical and onto-epistemic approaches towards
Doing Participatory Evaluation
The paper will present findings from a Social Science and Humanities Research (SSHRC) funded participatory evaluation conducted over the past four years in the Cree nation of Wemindji in Quebec, Canada. COOL (Challenging Our Own Limits) or "Nigawchiisuun" in Cree, was launched in 2003 as part of a broader program of governance initiatives within Wemindji. As a key component of this new governance program, COOL was to address the need for after-sc…
Who Stole my Methodology? Co-opting PAR
As we enter the 21st century it seems likely that the collection of methodologies and methods that have constituted PAR will continue to permeate mainstream research. There is increasing evidence, for example, that the discourse of participatory action research is now being widely used by international development agencies, NGOs and related organisations to promote a wide array of educational, healthcare and social programmes. This paper argues t…
Meeting the Global Challenge? Comparing Recent Initiatives in School Science and Technology
A comparison is made between two schemes in England and New Zealand--the technology colleges programme and the Science and Technology Teacher Fellowship scheme--designed to promote science and technology education in the two countries. Both schemes are placed within the context of recent developments in science and technology education in England and New Zealand and are evaluated as responses to the challenges posed for science and technology edu…
Some signposts for medical and nursing educational policy formulation for aboriginal healthcare
As part of a larger ethnographic inquiry designed to ascertain how the Cree communities of the James Bay in northern Quebec viewed, interpreted, and handled the growing incidence of diabetes, this study explored the perceptions, knowledge, and experiences of health professionals serving aboriginal clientele in connection with diabetes. Qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 28 health professionals. Findings indicate that …
The new business studies and the transformation of the business curriculum
This article presents a study of business education in schools in England and Wales. Its aim is to show three things. First, how, as business education in schools was reconstituted in the 1980s and 1990s, it became imbued with discourses through which syllabus content, teacher perspectives and teacher-student interactions were structured and channelled in particular ways so as to attempt to produce certain kinds of vocational identities congruent…
Critical Ethnography
This paper reviews and critiques significant developments within contemporary ethnography. The first part of the paper traces the antecedents of ethnography in an anthropology which was itself closely identified and entwined with colonialism and imperialism. The paper then goes on to review contemporary developments within ethnography, particularly those associated with postmodernism. Attempts to establish a critical ethnography are reviewed and …
