Learning progressions and the Australian curriculum mathematics
Mathematics curricula have traditionally focused on content knowledge, often in the form of a scope and sequence of increasingly difficult mathematics. The importance of using and applying mathematics is recognised in the current Australian Curriculum Mathematics (AC: M) as ‘proficiencies’ that are intended to be integrated with the content. There is little support for teachers to develop these proficiencies – reasoning, understanding, problem so…
Trends in Food and Beverage Portion Sizes in Australian Children; a Time-Series Analysis Comparing 2007 and 2011–2012 National Data
In 2011-2012 approximately 26% of Australian children aged between 5-17 years were reported to be overweight or obese. Furthermore, the increase in prevalence of overweight and obesity among US children parallels reported increases in energy intake and portion sizes of common foods, leading to the recognition that availability of larger portion sizes contributes to the rise in overweight and obesity prevalence. Thus, the aim of this time-series a…

Raising levels of school student engagement and retention in rural, regional and disadvantaged areas
This paper reports on the views of key members of the educational community about student engagement and retention in rural, regional and disadvantaged areas of the Australian state of Tasmania. It provides insights into the attributed reasons for the longstanding low levels of student retention in Tasmania, and the possible ways to militate against the widely censured problem of students leaving school too soon. The paper draws from principles o…
Food and beverage portion sizes in Australian children
Small changes in portion sizes were detected over 12 years in Australian children and adolescents with the degree of change varying by sex, age and food group. Knowledge of usual portion sizes could inform programs targeting appropriate serving sizes selection in children and adolescents
The national broadband network and the challenges of creating connectivity in education
Tasmania, one of the first locations to have communities connected to the national broadband network (NBN), provided the context within which to ask significant questions about the implications of the NBN for all levels and sectors of education. This paper reports findings from a research project that developed innovative methodology to explore the issues with 21 respondents categorised as "leaders" in the field of information and communication t…

The Aiken Attitude to Mathematics Scales
Data from 287 subjects were used to provide reliability figures for Aiken's Enjoyment of Mathematics and Value of Mathematics Scales. Principal factoring with iterations followed by varimax rotation of the entire attitude scale supported its two-dimensional structure. The degree of correlation between scales was lower than that for Aiken's data. Also the correlation of the scales with other variables supported the view that the scales measure dif…
Adolescent suicide at an Indian reservation
The backgrounds of ten American Indians who committed suicide before the age of twenty-five are compared statistically with a matched control group from the same tribe. The contrast is significant in at least six variables that point to the greater individual and familial disruption experienced by the suicidal youths. Suggestions for treatment and prevention based on the experience of this tribe are offered
