Contestations of Citizenship, Education and Democracy in an Era of Global Change, 2023
Teachers’ organizational participation: Profiles in 12 countries and correlates in teaching-related practices
Interactions within classrooms contribute to adolescents’ democratic civic development by providing resources fostering students’ political understanding. Many teachers participate in social or political groups in their communities and more broadly. These out-of-school experiences inform their classroom practices and are contextualized by national situations. The role played by these experiences has received little attention from social studies r…
A cross-national comparison of teachers' beliefs about the aims of civic education in 12 countries: A person-centered analysis
This article examines teachers' beliefs about the aims of citizenship education in 12 countries from Europe and Asia. A latent class analysis of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study of 2009 identified three distinct profiles of teachers' beliefs about the goals of citizenship education. These profiles are associated with teachers' characteristics and with national indicators of democratic development. Profiles can be more usefu…
Measurement Invariance in Comparing Attitudes Toward Immigrants Among Youth Across Europe in 1999 and 2009: The Alignment Method Applied to IEA Cived and ICCS
This study applies the alignment method, a technique for assessing measurement equivalence across many groups, to the analysis of adolescents’ support for immigrants’ rights in a pooled data set from the 1999 International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) Civic Education Study and the 2009 IEA International Civics and Citizenship Education Study. We examined measurement invariance across 92 groups (country by cohort…
Profiles of Adolescents’ Perceptions of Democratic Classroom Climate and Students’ Influence: The Effect of School and Community Contexts
A Psychological View of Civic Engagement Augmented by Introducing the Developmental Niche Model
It has taken nearly five decades for the interdisciplinary studies known as political socialization, the development of political understanding, participatory orientation, or education for democracy and civic engagement, to penetrate the consciousness of most scholars of human development. This is in spite of our field's increasing emphasis on contextualized development and implications for policy. To give some historical background, the first po…
A Typology of Youth Civic Engagement in Urban Middle Schools
Youth civic engagement occupies a central space in applied developmental science. However, understanding of the processes and contexts in which early adolescents become civically engaged is still limited. This study draws on a sample of approximately 4,000 students from 11 urban middle schools in Tennessee to address several gaps in the civic engagement literature. First, we use latent class analysis to identify types of civic engagement in early…
Nationalism and Support for Immigrants' Rights Among Adolescents in 25 Countries
Adolescents' attitudes toward immigrants develop in tandem with their sense of national identity. In this article we identify factors that influence restrictive views of nationalism and opposition or support for immigrants' rights during young people's formative years, among the generation that comprises today's young adults. Data were analyzed from 77,000 native-born 14-year-olds from 25 countries surveyed in the IEA Civic Education Study of 199…
Students' Conceptual Knowledge and Process Skills in Civic Education: Identifying Cognitive Profiles and Classroom Correlates
In 2 related studies framed by social constructivism theory, the authors explored a fine-grained analysis of adolescents' civic conceptual knowledge and skills and investigated them in relation to factors such as teachers' qualifications and students' classroom experiences. In Study 1 (with about 2,800 U.S. students), the authors identified 4 cognitive attributes (dimensions) underlying the test items of the International Association for the Eval…
Fostering young people’s support for participatory human rights through their developmental niches
The last 6 decades of empirical research on civic engagement among young people living in democracies and of the recognition of international human rights have seen the achievement of many milestones. This article focuses on some connections between these 2 areas and examines the ways in which everyday settings such as neighborhoods and the schools that exist within them can foster support for human rights (especially the practice of participator…
Participatory Niches for Emergent Citizenship in Early Adolescence: An International Perspective
This article is based on the assumption that the right to vote in national elections is not an essential dimension of citizenship for early adolescents as long as adolescents' other competencies and attitudes are nurtured in their everyday settings. The article addresses the issue of children or early adolescents and their political and civic participation from three perspectives. First, it examines how human rights and action in community settin…

Political Cognition and Its Restructuring in Young People
The process of cognitive restructuring, derived from research concerned with the Piagetian concept of accommodation, is applied to the study of political learning in children and adolescents. Particular emphasis is placed on how experience can lead to restructuring of both spatial and event representations of political knowledge. Illustrations from group discussions involving adolescents participating in an international computer-assisted simulat…
International psychological research that matters for policy and practice
After a brief history of the Committee on International Relations of the American Psychological Association, 3 points are made about international psychological research that matters. First, it matters when the definition of the research problem area and the findings can potentially be reflected in policy change, in the practice of educators or psychologists, or in the mindsets of a new generation of researchers. Person-centered analysis of adole…

How Adolescents in 27 Countries Understand, Support, and Practice Human Rights
An understanding of human rights among young people forms a foundation for future support and practice of rights. We have used data from 88,000 14‐year‐olds surveyed in the 1999 International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) Civic Education Study to examine country differences in students' knowledge pertaining to human rights compared with other forms of civic knowledge, and in students' attitudes toward promoting a…

Adolescents’ Political Socialization in Changing Contexts: An International Study in the Spirit of Nevitt Sanford
The recently completed IEA Civic Education Study collected data from 140,000 adolescent students in a total of 29 countries. A recent examination of the work of Nevitt Sanford shows that many aspects of the IEA Civic Education Study are parallel to methods and conclusions of his research from the 1950s through the 1970s and partake in the spirit of his work as well as extending it. These parallels include the use of a contextualized approach in t…
A Cross-National Analysis of Political and Civic Involvement Among Adolescents
Encouraging the development of ameaningful citizen identity during adolescence has always been a chal-lenge, but it has been especially per-plexing in the last decade because of changes in political, economic, societal, and media institutions, in the expecta-tions that adults have for young people, and in the expectations youth have for themselves. Much of the existing re-search on the development of political attitudes and behavior was conducted…

The School's Role in Developing Civic Engagement: A Study of Adolescents in Twenty-Eight Countries
Schools achieve the best results in fostering civic engagement when they rigorously teach civic content and skills, ensure an open classroom climate for discussing issues, emphasize the importance of the electoral process, and encourage a participative school culture. Schools whose students do not plan to attend college and have few educational resources at home face a special challenge. These are among the conclusions of the IEA Civic Education …

Naive Theories and Decision Making as Part of Higher Order Thinking in Social Studies
In the present study, the authors attempted to show how naive theories, age, and education relate to higher order thinking in adolescents and adults. In a structured interview, 54 adolescents and adults were asked to make decisions about two political issues: global warming and homelessness. Half of the adolescents had attended an intensive workshop on multiple issues including global warming. Results showed that regardless of age and education, …

Annotated bibliography of materials for adding an international dimension to undergraduate courses in developmental and social psychology
For centuries cross-cultural comparisons have contributed to attempts to understand human behavior (Herodotus being an often-quoted early example). Specialized journals for publishing cross-cultural psychological studies have been in existence for less than 20 years, however. The founding of the International Journal of Psychology took place in 1966. The first Annual Review article on culture and psychology was published only about 10 years ago b…
Depression and academic achievement among Indochinese refugee unaccompanied minors in ethnic and nonethnic placements
Unaccompanied Indochinese refugee adolescents resettled in the United States with ethnic foster families were significantly less depressed and had higher grade-point averages than those in foster care with Caucasian families or in group homes. The ongoing presence of an adult of similar ethnicity to the adolescent appeared to mitigate against the stress of adaptation to a new country
