African Refugee Poetic (Re)storying
In this paper, we turn to poetic (re)storying as a liberatory praxis and transgressive methodology in research with forcibly displaced people. Theoretically, the paper draws on endarkened feminist epistemology and poetic storying and (re)storying to illuminate how refugee women contest and defy gendered, racialized, colonial, and missionary refugee resettlement and education. In particular, the paper turns to poetic inquiry to offer new ways to e…

The rise and fall of private higher education in Afghanistan during and after military neoliberalism
Once an epicentre of higher learning, Afghanistan has been constructed as ground zero for globalisation and competing militaristic projects. Focusing on the privatisation of higher education, this paper examines how military occupation instilled neoliberal economic and educational policies. With the rise of the private higher education landscape, the paper illuminates how Afghans grew dissatisfied with private higher education due to compromised …
Considering refusal in the study of international education and development
Drawing on the concept of refusal, this paper offers a cautionary story of international development within the context of black Africa. Entering through the author's father's stories of development and weaving together different forms of 'data,' the paper utilises critical storying to illuminate how international education and development remains stuck in colonising, antiblack, and racialising imaginaries. Through intellectual practices of refus…
Towards black methods in research with refugees
Critical approaches to forced displacement and migration studies gesture towards methodologies and theoretical orientations that are contextualized within the complex socialities of refuge lifeworlds and ways of being. This article offers methodological approaches that account for the forces of displacement as well as the layered and textured experiences of forcibly displaced people. Turning to black studies and black feminist thought, the articl…
There, Not There
For us, “writing off the beaten track” has been propelled by collaborative study of ontoepistemological contributions that break the constraints of western knowledge-making. Black studies and women of color feminisms prompt us to pause long enough to breathe ... to interrogate the ellipsis ... to sit in the space between words or the dangling punctuation. What’s there (or not there) creatively points to ideas, questions, and methods that subvert …
Correlates of Anticipated Responses to Cigar Price Increase Among U.S. Adults Who Smoke Cigars
We examined the prevalence and correlates of anticipated responses to hypothetical cigar price increases. Data are from a 2021 representative sample of U.S. adults who reported past-30-day cigar use ( n = 454; mean age = 39.8 years). Weighted multivariable logistic regressions assessed the correlates of behavior change responses. If cigar price increased, 77.2% intend to pay more, 44.7% intend to reduce use, and 39.9%, 37.7%, and 17.1% intend to …
Praxis of the undercommons
The concept of the undercommons offers a lens for complicating the discourse of conviviality in education. In this paper, the authors draw on learning experiences opened through black feminisms, decoloniality and anti-coloniality, and new materialisms in an experimental graduate course. Presenting stories drawn from a shared educational space, they theorise fugitive convivial praxis and elucidate insurgent opportunities for intellectual study tha…
Complex complicity
I work as a Probation Officer; I have been doing this job for almost 15 years. I work primarily with men and have worked in major cities in England. I am a minority in England, both ethnically and religiously. I am a woman, and my family are migrants from Africa, and their grandparents were indentured labour from India. In all the ways I am different, I also often share histories of migration, of minority experience and of being an outsider with …
Plateaus, Puzzles, and PhDs
Digital storytelling as part of study creates an opening for reworking ideas. It marks an instance of recognition to access alternative ways of knowing, thinking, and doing. Guided by radical black studies and decolonizing methodologies, the authors draw on insights from digital storytelling to extend current understandings of educational research, theory, and practice. The connections across five digital stories are highlighted through a retrosp…
What is vaping?“ 10-years of Youth Questions Regarding Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems
The increasing popularity of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and the relationship of adolescent ENDS use to tobacco consumption in adulthood underscore the importance of effective prevention education. Prevention messaging relevant to youth curiosity about ENDS may serve to improve tobacco control strategies. ENDS-related questions were extracted from 10 years of transcripts of the National Institute of Drug Abuse’s Chat Day initiativ…
Less harmful’? Exploring reactions to quantitative modified risk claims for snus and e-cigarettes
Quantitative claims suggesting high levels of reduced risk when comparing e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco/snus relative to cigarettes may be successful in gaining attention and being persuasive for some audiences, particularly, if from more credible sources. However, message developers, users and evaluators should be mindful of message limitations and aim to mitigate unintended consequences
Measuring Youth Empowerment
Sociopolitical control (SPC) has been identified as a key element of the intrapersonal component of psychological empowerment. The Sociopolitical Control Scale (SPCS) is a widely used measure and has been modified for use among youth (SPCS‐Y). In light of the emerging interest in SPC among youth within community‐based research, this study applied item response theory (IRT) to examine the psychometric properties of the SPCS‐Y and to explore a brie…
Psychometric properties of a Recovery Empowerment Scale
Psychological empowerment (PE) is a multidimensional construct comprised of emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and relational domains. Although context‐specific measures of PE exist, no study to date has introduced and tested a measure of the construct that captures all four domains for both women and men in recovery from substance misuse. Furthermore, research has largely neglected the relational dimension, particularly in studies involving peopl…
Postcolonial M/Othering
To open up possibilities in inquiry, the authors write in a manner that extends a lens of postcolonial m/Othering through poetic autoethnography. They draw on the conceptualization of rememory to work with/through memories of their own as mothers for the sake of daughters. Building on poetics of remembering, the authors braid their experiences from Kenya and the Philippines, within remnants of colonialism and its tentacles, inviting the reader on…
Smokers’ and Young Adult Non-Smokers’ Perceptions and Perceived Impact of Snus and E-Cigarette Modified Risk Messages
Although no tobacco products are safe, tobacco companies in the United States may request regulatory authorization to make certain "modified risk tobacco product" (MRTP) claims in their marketing. However, few qualitative studies have explored consumer perceptions and understanding of comparative risk messages and wordings. We examined consumer perceptions of statements indicating reduced risks and exposure to chemicals from snus and e-cigarettes…
