Liberal democratic justice and identity politics in education
Drawing on Courtney Jung’s structural theory of obligation, this article proposes a novel interpretation of the relationship between liberal democratic justice and identity politics. This interpretation, in turn, justifies an anti-racist curriculum in the context of liberal democratic education. According to Jung’s theory, the liberal state has an obligation to improve the status of oppressed identity groups in society in so far as the state itse…
Was heißt ökologische Mündigkeit

Discussion and inquiry
There is a steady line of academic discourse around the topic of controversial issues and how to approach them in and through education. In this line of discourse, discussion is widely seen as a primary method of democratic education that is especially suitable to foster its major educational aims, such as tolerance, reciprocal respect, or political autonomy. The aim of this contribution is to show that the widespread emphasis on the educational …

Neue Technologien – neue Kindheiten?

The West and the Rest? Zur postkolonialen Kritik an Global Citizenship Education
This contribution develops a defense of a universalist conception of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) against one of its most central critiques. This critique argues that GCE is based on genuinely 'Western values' (e. g., in the form of a concep tion of human rights or conceptions of rationality or the self ), which are neither universally accepted nor universally valid and therefore unjustly forced on members of non-Western cultures and societi…

Global justice and childhood
This brief introduction frames a guest-edited collection of eleven contributed articles in the Journal of Global Ethics focused on global justice and childhood. On a general level, there is widespread consensus that there is a strong need for improvement in the lives of children around the globe. What global justice demands in this regard, however, has never been fleshed out in detail and there is only a little philosophical literature on this to…
Education, epistemic virtues, and the power of toleration
Toleration is usually regarded as a pivotal democratic virtue that should be cultivated in the educational systems of liberal democracies. The concept of toleration, however, is marked by deep ambivalence. Power-theoretical criticisms of toleration as a political and educational ideal have emphasized that discourses of toleration are entangled with societal power struggles, and tend to naturalize social hierarchies and reify individual and collec…
The politics and ethics of toleration
Toleration is widely considered as one of the core values of liberalism. In modern liberal societies, characterized by deep disagreements concerning the nature of the good and the just, toleration
Education for Democratic Tolerance, Respect and the Limits of Political Liberalism
Criticisms of autonomy‐based justifications of toleration as an educational aim and as a political principle assume that personal autonomy can provide only a partial justification of toleration and that it serves as a basis for illiberal educational enforcements of a particular conception of the good. In this article, I defend an autonomy‐ and respect‐based conception and justification of education for tolerance as a democratic virtue against its…
