Inclusion and Participation
This paper presents an analysis of three focal cases embedded in a larger study of Welfare Reform and higher education using extended case methods, examining alternative paths to exiting welfare, finding employment, and leaving poverty via education and training. The results show how Welfare Reform’s signature “work-first” approach affects pursuit of educational goals and the role of policy in helping meet families’ needs. Two main themes were re…
Using Complex Adaptive Systems Theory to Identify Best Adaptive Practices for Inclusion within Systems of Care
Systems of Care (SOCs) are distinctive among health care organizations because they focus on process as much as outcomes and consider families as equal partners in improving clients’ outcomes. Because SOCs attend to interactions among all aspects of the clients’ world, we may think of them as ecosystems with continually changing environments. “Theories of Change” (TOCs) are logic models that structure and coordinate SOCs’ conceptualization, imple…
Collaborative Approaches to Undergraduate Research Training
The undergraduate research experience (URE) provides an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful work with faculty mentors on research projects. An increasingly important component of scholarly research is the application of research data management best practices, yet this often falls out of the scope of URE programs. This article presents a case study of faculty and librarian collaboration in the integration of a library and research da…
Competently Mixing
The authors describe a model that incorporates cultural competence principles from clinical practice into a mixed methods framework, thus providing a new perspective that reconciles some of the historically perceived differences in paradigmatic stances. The authors present direct connections from each principle to the application of a mixed methods study. An example of a study of a welfare policy is presented along with a critique concerning the …
A Social Justice Perspective on Medicare Part D in an Age of Reform
This article examines the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) in its current form and explains why a critical perspective is useful when analyzing the policy and reform efforts. Using this approach, we consider the development of the policy and describe ways that gender and racial differences may hinder equal access to medications for some of the most vulnerable older adults. This article explores the impl…
Life History and Narrative Analysis
This paper discusses a methodological approach to research that enhances critical analysis by contextualizing qualitative research findings within participants' individual experiences. We demonstrate the combined use of life history methods and feminist narrative analysis to explore Black women's everyday experiences with mental illness, from their perspectives. These interpretive methods reach beyond pathologized conceptions of identity and adju…
Developing a Standpoint Practice Method With Cases
Practitioners confront complex social problems along with clients, helping them find solutions to problems they face while living under oppressive economic and social circumstances. Clients require help with acute problems, yet have vital experience to draw on. Using feminist standpoint theories promotes consciousness-raising for practitioners about clients’ views on their situations, social structures, and power relationships, increasing clients…
Mixing Methods for Full-Strength Results
This article discusses the practical application of mixed quantitative and qualitative designs. Mixed methods designs can be especially powerful in illuminating policy solutions and directions for social action, thus supporting the social justice goals of social work and other helping professions. However, the decision to combine methods must be appropriate for the study, elevating the integrity and strength of the results. This article uses two …
Fostering Hope
In this article, the authors analyze the experiences of one participant in HOPE, a pilot program that supports teenage mothers who want to pursue a college education. Using feminist standpoint and social capital theories, the analysis explores the meaning of themes that are interwoven throughout four narratives about family, education, college/dreams, and HOPE. Some emergent themes, such as key relationships and client-centered learning environme…
