The role of graduate education in the rising wage premium for professional and managerial occupations, 1980–2019
Part of the rise in US wage inequality comes from a widening gap between professional/managerial (PM) and other occupations (NPM). We examine the role of education in the trend in this gap from 1980 to 2019. Prior research typically combined all college graduates in one category, but we highlight the distinctive role of graduate degrees. Since 1980, NPM occupations have never had as many as five percent with a graduate degree, but by 2019, thirty…

Swiss Job Market Monitor
The Swiss Job Market Monitor (SJMM) is a data collection of job ads for a national labour market from 1950 onwards. It is a prime example for demonstrating how to turn digital data into a high-quality social science data set. It is also exemplary for combining digital data with historically grown job ads data to provide a comparable time series covering the past 70 years. Paying close attention to sampling procedures, coverage, and key variables,…
Gender Segregation, Occupational Sorting, and Growth of Wage Disparities Between Women
Average female wages in traditionally male occupations have steeply risen over the past couple of decades in Germany. This trend led to a new and substantial pay gap between women working in male-typed occupations and other women. I dissect the emergence of these wage disparities between women, using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (1992–2015). Compositional change with respect to education is the main driver for growing inequality. Oth…
Occupational Devaluation Due to Feminization? Causal Mechanics, Effect Heterogeneity, and Evidence from the United States, 1960 to 2010
Proponents of the devaluation hypothesis claim that occupations experiencing a significant inflow of female workers are devalued, both in status and in pay. We suggest that devaluation is an essentially cultural phenomenon that can be subject to change over time and that is not constant with varying contexts. Our theoretical model connects changing gender compositions in occupations with the formation of occupational gender stereotypes. In combin…
