The effect of an interdependence mindset on empowering help towards immigrants
Building cohesive societies where individuals from diverse backgrounds can thrive is one of the most challenging tasks both within and between communities. In the context of migration, this challenge is often exacerbated by counterproductive emotional dynamics, such as the perception of threats from the host society towards immigrants, which can hinder the development of supportive and empowering relationships. The present research examined wheth…

We Are All the Same and (Not) Judged the Same? Examining Attribution Tendencies of Liberals in the Context of Norm Violations by Refugees
This study examines how political ideology shapes attribution processes, focusing on how liberals attribute undesirable behaviour by a minority outgroup member they support. It was investigated whether, depending on the actor's group membership, the strength of norm violation affects attribution biases and emotional and punitive reactions. Two experiments ( N 1 = 180, N 2 = 276) showed that participants were more likely to attribute a refugee's (…
Transfer between Science and Practice: Findings from the Network of Social Psychology on Forced Migration and Integration
The purpose of this article is to present approaches that can help reducing the gaps between research and practice in the field of refugee integration. We provide examples of research-practice transfer activities that we hope will be taken up by researchers in different fields and implemented for refugee integration in various countries. We describe examples of bi-directional transfer between social psychological researchers and practitioners wor…

Do Election Pledges Matter? The Effects of Broken and Kept Election Pledges on Citizens’ Trust in Government
The functioning of representative democracy depends on a “responsible electorate” that rewards and punishes parties according to their promises. Holding representatives accountable is the only way for voters to keep control over the government. This article draws on the normative assumption of accountability theory to investigate the impact of information on pledge fulfillment on citizens’ trust in government, taking into account moderators of th…
Why do you think Christmas will never ever be celebrated again?” A paradoxical thinking intervention's potential to affect conflict‐related concerns, willingness to compromise, and openness towards re…
The large number of refugees and host countries’ citizens’ reactions regarding their admission have been major global issues. Thus, psychological interventions to foster intergroup relations in the asylum context are desirable. In three experiments with general population samples ( N = 986), we adapted a paradoxical thinking intervention to the intergroup context of Germans and refugees, thus testing its effectiveness in an early stage of conflic…
Emotions for solidarity: The relations of moral outrage and sympathy with hierarchy-challenging and prosocial hierarchy-maintaining action intentions in support of refugees
Need some help, honey? Dependency-oriented helping relations between women and men in the domestic sphere
Five studies (N = 2,339) found that men and women, especially if high on benevolent sexism, engage in dependency-oriented cross-gender helping relations in domestic tasks. Study 1 revealed that, in response to hypothetical scenarios of cross-gender helping interactions in traditionally feminine domains (e.g., cooking a dish), men's benevolent sexism correlated with their intentions to seek dependency-oriented help (direct assistance, rather than …
One world in diversity – A social-psychological intervention to foster international collective action intention
Although effective interventions to increase international collective action for human rights are highly desirable, the validation of theory-based interventions and their transfer to this practical field is still scarce. We investigated whether collective action intention can be improved by using a diversity intervention technique rooted in social psychology. The intervention builds on the ingroup projection model, postulating that negative inter…
