Co‐Designing an Easy‐Read Adult Social Care Outcomes Measure for Older People
BACKGROUND: In the UK, over half a million older people rely on publicly funded social care services to support their daily living needs. It is crucial to measure the quality of these services to ensure they meet the needs of those they support. The Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT) was developed to assess social care-related quality of life (SCRQoL; Netten et al., 2012). However, many older individuals, particularly those living with de…
The adult social care outcomes toolkit easy read for older people (Ascot-ER OP)
ASCOT easy read for older people (ASCOT-ER OP) is an adaptation of the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT-SCT4) that was co-produced with older adults and their families to improve accessibility and feasibility of completion. This study aimed to examine the structural validity of ASCOT-ER OP using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Rasch analysis. Data were collected by British Red Cross (BRC) as part of short-term support for adults li…
Research and training fellowships as a mechanism for building research capacity in social care
Research capacity building in social care has received increased attention and dedicated funding in recent years, yet opportunities for practitioners to engage with research or apply evidence-based practice remain limited. This article evaluates one mechanism for developing capacity through a research-practice partnership: funding and supporting social care staff to undertake practitioner-research fellowships. This qualitative study incorporated …
Understanding and supporting change in health systems using the strategic action fields framework
Policy-driven change in public service systems is difficult to implement. We focus upon ‘sources of authority’, which figure within the Strategic Action Fields Framework (SAFF) as resources mobilized by socially skilled actors to catalyse and sustain change. Drawing on qualitative case studies evaluating a large-scale policy-driven change in the English NHS, the Vanguard New Care Models programme, we (1) expand the definitions of ‘sources of auth…
Enhancing quality of life measurement
The ASCOT-ER measure for older people is suitable for older people using social care services with mild to moderate dementia, mild cognitive impairment and other age-related needs. The revisions applied were designed to improve comprehension, judgement and response for this group and even those who were most cognitively impaired experienced fewer issues by the final round of testing. Nonetheless, some prompting was still required, particularly fo…
Evaluating the role and impact of coaching for family carers
This pilot study examines the role and impact of a coaching intervention on carers’ lives and well-being, drawing on interview data with 12 carers and two coaches. It shows that carers highly value coaching. Reported benefits include: carers feeling listened to and treated as individuals; increased levels of self-awareness, self-care and confidence; and feeling more empowered, in control and able to make choices. Carers also reported improved rel…
Playing its part
This paper presents the findings of a UK-based evaluation of service user-led role-play interviews for social work students. Skill development relating to ‘procedural competencies’ (relationship forming, communication skills) and ‘meta-competencies’ (linking theory to practice, reflection) is explored using a mixed-method repeated-measures design. Assessment feedback from student self-ratings (N = 32), as well as service user (N = 7) and practice…
Success” in policy piloting
Research has demonstrated that pilots contain multiple shifting purposes, not all of which relate to simple policy testing or refinement. Judging the success of policy pilots is therefore complex, requiring more than a simple judgment against declared goals. Marsh and McConnell provide a framework against which policy success can be judged, distinguishing program success from process and political success. We adapt Boven's modification of this fr…
Ambiguity and Conflict in Policy Implementation
Policy driven change is challenging, with a significant gap between theory and practice. A key tension in enacting such change is achieving a balance between bottom-up development of local, context-specific approaches, and top-down, centrally determined policy solutions and their mutual sequencing. Ideal type models of the policy-making process envisage a rational ordered approach, driven by evidence and accompanied by ongoing evaluation of outco…
An Evaluation of an Integrated Intermediate Acute Response Team (ART) in delivering person-centred, co-ordinated care
The International Journal of Integrated Care (IJIC) is an online, open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes original articles in the field of integrated care on a continuous basis.IJIC has an Impact Factor of 5.120 (2020 JCR, received in June 2021)
