Higher Resting Metabolism Is Associated With Increased Free Triiodothyronine Among Female Reindeer Herders in Northern Finland
Background Thyroid hormones (TH) regulate metabolism and are shaped by environmental factors—ambient temperature in particular. Previous work among indigenous and non‐indigenous populations in Russia revealed that there are seasonal shifts in TH dynamics such that total and free triiodothyronine (fT 3 ) and free thyroxine (fT 4 ) increase during winter. Elevated TH levels in these populations were positively correlated with the elevated resting m…
Evolving threats in an unforgiving climate
This study examines how climate conditions influence life expectancy in Europe based on the impact of year-to-year temperature variability adjusted for economic changes. By focusing on a narrow range of ambient temperatures, we made the model sensitive to both extreme weather and moderately adverse conditions, such as low-temperature modulation of the winter infection season. Regional trend estimates from 1990 to 2019 were pooled to evaluate the …
To vaccinate or to isolate? Establishing which intervention leads to measurable mortality reduction during the Covid-19 Delta wave in Poland
Background: During the Delta variant COVID-19 wave in Poland there were serious regional differences in vaccination rates and discrepancies in the enforcement of pandemic preventive measures, which allowed us to assess the relative effectiveness of the policies implemented. Methods: Creating a model that would predict mortality based on vaccination rates among the most vulnerable groups and the timing of the wave peak enabled us to calculate to w…
Phenylketonuria Patients’ and Their Caregivers’ Perception of the Pandemic Lockdown
The first pandemic lockdown dramatically impacted many aspects of everyday life, including healthcare systems. The purpose of this study was to identify problems of patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) and their parents/caregivers during that time. We aimed to analyse potential differences in the self-reported compliance and characteristics of contacts with a doctor/dietitian before and during the pandemic lockdown and the perception of access to …
The Relationship between Eosinophil Density in the Colonic Mucosa and Eosinophil Blood Count in Children
Eosinophils are found in the mucosa of the healthy gastrointestinal tract, but they also often accompany gastrointestinal diseases. We hypothesized that a positive correlation exists between blood eosinophil count and colonic eosinophil mucosal density in children. Electronic health records regarding 181 colonoscopies, performed with biopsy in the years 2019-2022, were screened for information on blood and colonic eosinophil count, age, sex, diag…
Comparison of the Effect of Amaranth Oil vs. Rapeseed Oil on Selected Atherosclerosis Markers in Overweight and Obese Subjects
It is well known that rapeseed oil improves lipid profile and has antiatherosclerotic properties. Recently, amaranth oil has also become popular due to its potential health benefits. However, the effect of this oil on atherosclerosis markers in humans is not clear. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effect of amaranth and rapeseed oils on selected atherosclerosis-related parameters in overweight and obese subjects. In this randomized cros…
Helicobacter pylori Infection in Children with Phenylketonuria Does Not Depend on Metabolic Control and Is Not More Frequent Than in Healthy Subjects—A Cross-Sectional Study
In a small preliminary study, phenylketonuria and poor metabolic control were suggested as risk factors for Helicobacter pylori infection in children as detected with an antigen stool test. We aimed to determine Helicobacter pylori prevalence in an adequately sized group of individuals with phenylketonuria and healthy subjects using the standard gold test (urea breath test). Further, we correlated Helicobacter pylori infection with metabolic cont…
Genetic Variants of DMBT1 and SFTPD and Disease Severity in Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease—A Polish Population-Based Study
Deleted in malignant brain tumours 1 protein (DMBT1) and surfactant protein D (SFTPD) are antimicrobial peptides previously linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) susceptibility. This study attempts to link the most potential IBD-associated polymorphisms in DMBT1 and SFTPD with the disease severity in children. A total of 406 IBD patients (Crohn's disease (CD) n = 214 and ulcerative colitis (UC) n = 192) were genotyped using hydrolysis probe …
Subjective Psychophysical Experiences in the Course of Inflammatory Bowel Disease—A Comparative Analysis Based on the Polish Pediatric Crohn’s and Colitis Cohort (Pococo)
No gold standard is available to evaluate subjective psychophysical experiences in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to assess pain, anxiety, and limitations in social activities at diagnosis and the worst flare of the disease in relation to clinical expression, treatment and IBD severity. A total of 376 children completed the survey (Crohn's disease (CD) n = 196; ulcerative colitis (UC) n = 180). The questionnaire included 12 …
The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Perception of Health and Treatment-Related Issues among Patients with Phenylketonuria in Poland—The Results of a National Online Survey
There is agreement that the pandemic has affected the healthcare system and behaviour of patients. This study aims to identify problems encountered by patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) and their parents/caregivers during the six-week pandemic lockdown in Poland (15 March to 30 April 2020). To determine the factors that influenced health and treatment-related issues, as well as the respondents' perception of the impact of the pandemic, study par…
Comparison of Subjective and Objective Methods to Measure the Physical Activity of Non-Depressed Middle-Aged Healthy Subjects with Normal Cognitive Function and Mild Cognitive Impairment—A Cross-Secti…
This study compared subjective and objective methods of measuring different categories of physical activity in non-depressed middle-aged subjects with normal cognitive function (NCF) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In total, 75 participants (NCF: n = 48, MCI: n = 27) were recruited and physical activity was assessed for seven days using the ActiGraph and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Anthropometric parameters, bod…
Effects of Endurance and Endurance–Strength Training on Endothelial Function in Women with Obesity
Some investigations have demonstrated that a combined endurance-strength training is the most effective in the treatment of obesity. The aim of the research was to access how different trainings influence: endothelial function, lipid metabolism, and risk of atherosclerosis in women with obesity. In a randomized trial, 39 obese women aged 28-62 completed endurance (n = 22, 60-80% HR max ) or combined training (n = 17, 20 minutes of strength exerci…
