  • The Sublime Extends to Chinese Aesthetics

    Jonathan W Johnson, Robert R Clewis•ARTICLE•Philosophy East and West•2025

A widespread view denies that there is a concept of the sublime in Chinese thought and philosophical aesthetics. This denial is a mistake. We examine texts and artworks that indicate that the experience of the sublime can be found in Chinese aesthetics and theories of art and aesthetic experience. To show this, we first present an overview of the sublime extracted from western writers: we describe the sublime experience’s structure, objects, and …

  • Tackled by Covid in Italy

    Robert R Clewis•ARTICLE•Italian Americana•2022

Aristotle says all human beings aim at happiness. Maybe each culture does too. As a naturalized citizen of Italy who was born in Tampa, some of the rules have puzzled me. For instance, don't order pizza in the afternoon. (The oven is not heated up yet.) Other ones I simply love: belonging to a culture that has a pausa pranzo. Still others remind me of what grandmother used to say: Don't swim in Lake Garda after eating because you could die of a c…

  • Kant's Humorous Writings

    Robert R Clewis, Noël Carroll•BOOK•Kant's Humorous Writings•2020

Commonly regarded as one of the most serious philosophers of all time (this is a man who took his daily walk at precisely the same time each day), Kant's Humorous Writings explores a dimension of Kant's work that has hitherto been almost entirely ignored but which casts his philosophy into a new light. With entirely new translations of Kant's bon mots, quips, and anecdotes, supplemented by historical commentary and numerous illustrations, this gu…

  • Nature, Religion, and Imagination

    Open Access•Robert R Clewis•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2018

After sharing some reflections, I raise three questions. The first asks about the role of nature and reason according to Kant's teleological history, and the extent to which Kant's essays written before the Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790) are “dogmatic,” as his phrase “aim of nature” might suggest. The second asks about Kant's “impure” ethics and the role of religion. What would Kantian religion look like today? The last question concern…

  • Reading Kant's Lectures

    Robert R Clewi, Robert R Clewis•EDITOR•BOOK•Reading Kant's Lectures•2015•Cited by: 17

This important collection of more than twenty original essays by prominent Kant scholars covers the multiple aspects of Kant’s teaching in relation to his published works. With the Academy edition’s continuing publication of Kant’s lectures, the role of his lecturing activity has been drawing more and more deserved attention. Several of Kant’s lectures on metaphysics, logic, ethics, anthropology, theology, and pedagogy have been translated into E…

  • Lectures on Anthropology

Open Access•Immanuel Kant, Robert B Louden et al.•TRANSLATOR•BOOK•Lectures on Anthropology•2012

Kant was one of the inventors of anthropology, and his lectures on anthropology were the most popular and among the most frequently given of his lecture courses. This volume contains the first translation of selections from student transcriptions of the lectures between 1772 and 1789, prior to the published version, Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View (1798), which Kant edited himself at the end of his teaching career. The two most extens…

  • Kant's consistency regarding the regime change in France

    Open Access•Robert R Clewis•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2006•Cited by: 1

Can it be consistent to be interested, for moral reasons, in the fact that uninvolved spectators of a regime change are enthusiastic about that change, when the latter is carried out according to means considered immoral or unjust? Yes. In ‘An Old Question Raised Again’ ( The Conflict of the Faculties, 1798), Kant demonstrates a morally based interest in disinterested spectators’ expressions (aesthetic judgments) of enthusiasm for the idea of a r…
